i have plenty of thoughts on why it matters that this is an illegal order but here i’ll just comment that i think liberals who throw their hands up and say “it doesn’t matter” have self lobotomized themselves into thinking that trump is god king of america

Love this short video by J. Draper about a book from 1962 with extensive interviews of queer men at a time it was illegal in the UK. Interesting perspective on how trans people were viewed at the time near the end, too! youtu.be/_y9OOe9AIEw?...

"Cis people are afraid that trans people will laugh at them. Trans people are afraid that cis people will kill them"

Good. It’s horrific how other platforms abused their reach to strangle local, independent, and national outlets alike. I WANT to see news and actual vetted work and I WANT journalists to get rewarded for it. Because I want to live in a thinking human world over some AI generated slop dystopia

The push to fire Government workers is actually a scam designed to funnel even more money to government contractors and management consulting. The dirty secret of "smaller government" is that it benefits management consulting firms. The works still has to get done, but with 40% overhead.

"debate me"

Respect can mean lots and lots of things.

I just need you all to understand that when people say this what they really are saying is "being a woman is a sex thing"

With trans panic everywhere these days, resurfacing my tribute to my Aunt Rachel Pollack, who I only learned later in life was trans and a hero to many other people theracket.news/p/my-aunt-ra...

White guy from a 90% white town steps into a restaurant bathroom with one other person, a black man, in it and thinks to himself "my god I never realized 50% of all people in America are black until just now"

Software engineering absolutely can be creative, but a lot of large companies try and turn it into an assembly line rather than a creative endeavor and that’s a shame

Yep. This also explains the bizarre focus on linguistic changes. A wealthy, middle-aged political pundit cannot imagine being forced to move states to access HRT but he can imagine someone scolding him about misusing they/them pronouns. It's anxiety and animosity all the way down.

I really don't get how Democrats can be handed the easy layup of "Republicans are uniting to suppress the underage sex trafficking report about an unliked and unqualified nominee" and decide the best thing to do is minimize its importance.

As a footnote to the previous thread, being a good player of an ttrpg is primarily not one’s skill with a game but *how good you are to play with*.

“you mustn’t call them skeets anymore!” said the fool to the site full of people with pathological demand avoidance

Love these two, even if I worry they’ll kill me if I feed them too late

An ex-NY Times columnist and Ivy League grad interviewed a billionaire about how he, the world’s richest man, and several other billionaires helped another billionaire/Ivy League grad/real estate mogul world defeat an HBCU grad to reclaim the most powerful office in the world. The headline:

"Don't Engage, Just Block" absolutely IS the Bluesky motto. The notion of a "Bluesky Elder" is vaguely ridiculous but the ONE THING that we oldheads are good for is telling the new folks that blocking without engagement is praxis, and encouraging them to do it early and often.

I don’t think people were generally happy to see her, but i love fairies and i love tempo decks so she and i got along swimmingly

highly recommend people read this report. it is invaluable.

I've read countless think-pieces in reaction to Tuesday's election results. None of them really came close to hitting the nail on the head quite like this one does. YMMV, but this one says it all for me. Thank you, @amandalehr.bsky.social www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/upd...

Up to this point i had kept a twitter account to keep up with some artists i couldn’t find elsewhere, but enough have moved and it’s gotten bad enough that it’s time for me to completely leave that site

New: We’ve confirmed Apple quietly introduced a feature in the new iOS that is preventing cops from hacking iPhones that they have confiscated as evidence. Apple really did say ACAB www.404media.co/apple-quietl...

yeah i think there's no situation where offering young men Republican Lite is going to please them when 200-proof Manosphere Ultra is right there. so... maybe try to offer a bit more tough love. "stop listening to weird dudes on youtube and get a fucking job."

Discworld QOTD, from Jingo “History was full of the bones of good men who'd followed bad orders in the hope that they could soften the blow. Oh, yes, there were worse things they could do, but most of them began right where they started following bad orders.”

what i need cis folks to understand is how badly we really do need you we need your support, we need you to march with us, we need you to defend us and protect us with everything you’ve got don’t just tell your trans friends you have our backs, show us we need to see it more than ever

And in the midst of this, you will feel like resistance must be joyless. That the stakes are so high, and the work so large, that rest and relaxation and enjoyment are selfish distractions, something undermining the pursuit of justice. This is exactly, *exactly* wrong.

The most frustrating thing about this "debate" is that we already live in the world right-wingers say they want: Vanishingly few trans people play sports; medical providers require long assessments before transition. You cannot appease bigots because their stated concerns are not based in reality.

I don't know if this will help anyone, but it's what I'm using to avoid spirals: "Don't borrow grief from the future."

A few thoughts before I go to sleep: 1. This election was always going to be extremely close. 2. News orgs compete with each other to be the first to call. Don't be surprised if some of these results get recalled due to premature trigger fingers. 3. If it's past your usual bedtime. Go to bed ...

If it helps, here's the 2020 timeline of when stuff was called

Delaware state Sen. Sarah McBride is once again making history — she will be the first openly transgender person to serve in the U.S. Congress.
