Long shot, but maybe Dog by Daniel Pennec. I read it a long time ago, and don't remember too many details, but I think there was a scene in a kitchen. I don't think it was post apoc but I recall the mood as being a bit dark/sad.

I like maps and will refer to them often, especially when the characters are traveling. I don't have good sense of direction. Too many times, as an example, I'll picture a character moving south, and then it'll say something like "toward the sun" and I have to try to reorient my character.
