I realize this can be a decision of time-in-the-game vs what you get out of that time, but I thought it made my character richer in a way, missing things.

My suggestion is to just keep playing and this is the playthrough of your character. I had more fun not min-maxing this game (even min-maxing story) and just discovering things organically. Then on another play through I do things differently.
