I caught one of the babies getting ready to shed! How can I tell? It's hard to see here, without comparison, but they get kind of dusty looking. A little pale. And they always start right around the mouth, so you can see a bit of that color difference there. Fun fact, they eat their skin! 🦎

Detail of the wee lizard I saw Saturday - zoom in to the large flat scale upper left and you'll see the blue-gray, round parietal eye, a light-sensitive (but not image-forming) so-called "third eye" connected to the pineal gland, which produces melatonin and helps regulate circadian rhythms. 🌿🦎

👩What are you doing? 🦎Just hanging in there… 👩Same. Crested #Geckos (Correlophus ciliatus) use setae on their feet (and tail) to allow them to grip smooth surfaces. Their grip is so strong they have double jointed toes, needed to release the tension when walking! #gecko #herps #reptiles #🦎

I took this in 1978 in the Everglades. This gator was sunning itself and I was about ten feet away, laying on the ground. Gators are pretty mellow when sunning...I am alive to prove it! I would not do this anywhere near a croc in Zambia!! #Alligator #EvergladesNP #Herps #Reptiles #Photography
