Holy s**t...

Relatable quotes from Australia on the latest @wmo-global.bsky.social "I'm not sure what researchers can say that we haven't said a thousand times "Scream these findings from the tops of buildings? Write my comments in capitals? Say all this while dancing on TikTok? @lindenashcroft.bsky.social

Cartoonists stepping up.

Just heard that Trump is putting an end to atmospheric monitoring site NY67 that is run out of my lab. This is one of the oldest NADP sites in the US, continually measuring acid rain and other pollutants since 1977. Closing it down is tragic.

The news has been more than a bit grim of late, so hooray for @carbonbrief.org providing some genuine and really meaningful **good** news: the UK's carbon emissions in 2024 were the lowest since 1872, because demand for fossil fuels just keeps decreasing. www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-uk-...

📢 You are from Sub-Saharan Africa, have a MSc in biological science? Here is a PhD offer in 🇰🇪 w\ ICIPE, Univ Embu, CIRAD: "Evaluation of impact of #agroforestry 🌳🌽 & conventional farming systems on belowground #biodiversity 🐜🪱 & regulating services" 📅 19 Mar 2025 scholarships.icipe.org/calls/51

Like the rapid unscheduled disassembly of our democracy.

Let's talk about this Nature piece in more detail. I've rarely read something so anti-scientific anywhere short of the National Review. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Ugh... www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Appoint to Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority: "a leading voice for the repeal of the ban on offshore oil and gas exploration as well as support and subsidies to make fossil fuel drilling more attractive." ???? www.rnz.co.nz/news/environ...

This is Marco Rubio explaining how the USA promised to defend Ukraine forever if they got rid of their nuclear arsenal left after the Soviet Union fell. This is why lil marco was sinking into the couch. He was hoping we wouldn’t find it…so don’t RT right now this very second.

I wonder if the current government thinks you should have melted plastic in your marmite sandwich?

My first for @theguardian.com about an incredible discovery on Rēkohu - can't wait to find out more as the team begins the process of dating the waka (thanks to editor Virginia Harrison and @evacorlett.bsky.social) www.theguardian.com/world/2025/m...

This is amazing!! www.teaonews.co.nz/2025/03/03/o...

Those companies giving up or stepping back from your promises of sustainability and climate change action - we will remember. You only have integrity once.

What’s a lovely random thing you observed this week while you were out and about?

Very much worth reading, applies in contexts outside Africa also. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Much stronger statement out by @agu.org today. Full statement below. go.agu.org/index.php/em...

I might have to change careers - this is one prize I would love to win! What a trophy. However, I think I might need to practice for 20+ years first. NZ has some pretty fab science reporters!

What can peat contribute to climate issues: www.weforum.org/stories/2025...

Wonderful vegan chocolate #researchcake. Two summer students who studied water depths in agricultural peats (wells on left) and temperature dependence of enhanced rock weathering (dunite rock is slightly green on right). Both management approaches that could reducing CO2 burden on atmosphere.

An acre of land can power a car to go 13,000 miles per year using biofuel (corn ethanol), or 900,000 miles per year using solar.

How will we curb GHG emissions if we don't maintain national talent? "Four of seven NIWA scientists who contributed to the research ... have left the institute after losing their jobs in cost-cutting, and now work overseas." www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

I am deeply sorry to hear about the financial impacts on researchers in the US at present

F*ck all of the warmongers, the weapons makers, the politicians and leaders with their divisive language making us hate. We should send them to another planet so the rest of us can live in peace. www.bbc.com/news/article...

It is truly strange how embedded this myth has become among the political class. DOC is not presiding over a vast empire of scrubland that it’s holding economically hostage for some reason www.thepress.co.nz/nz-news/3504...

New paper alert: ‘eddy covariance measurements in an agave plantation’ - key findings: (1) Plant productivity was due to day- and nighttime CO2 uptake, (2) soil dryness causes switch to CAM pathway, (3) photosynthetic plasticity controls ecosystem CO2 exchange. doi.org/10.1016/j.ag...

Like this paper: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... Argues that gains in soil carbon likely due to better rainfall rather than change in management and yet carbon credits were paid.

Can someone make an AI that will set up my computer the way I want it set up? Sometimes I don't even know what the right words are to search in google or it ends up in a rabbit hole of endless links

Wow here's a disconnect "The Prime Minister talked up the need for science and technology to be part of the Government’s economic growth agenda." www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/...

This feels like doing environmental research to find solutions at times: "...on a steep slog uphill through pelting rain or snow, it’s good to rest against a tree for a moment and try to remember that hiking is fun — to recharge myself for the next push uphill." www.nytimes.com/2025/01/18/o...

physics of climate impacts 101: - Stuff gets hot (worse heatwaves) - Hot air holds more water vapor (heavier rainfall) - Hot air is thirstier air (higher drought risk) - Warm water is hurricane food (stronger storms) - Hot water expands and hot ice melts (sea level rise)
