In recent work with @qalbaugh.bsky.social, we find that in 2019 and 2021 parties nominated LGBTQ2S+ candidates in districts they were over 16 percentage points less likely to win than straight cis candidates. About 2/3 of the gap is due to which parties and 1/3 is due to which districts.

"The authors calculated that the average migrant worker in Canada is now paid more than one fifth (22.6 per cent) less than a comparable Canadian-born worker. Prior to 2014, that gap was only 9.5 per cent."

I missed this yesterday. It’s likely to get some tongues & fingers wagging, especially in Alberta, but it’s interesting food for thought from @jimbostanford.bsky.social apple.news/AtOsbJvyUSLO...

Love it. Just a shame that the new arena being pitched is about half the capacity. Is that best value for taxpayers and team?

Wow! Each $1 spent on Universal Pre-Kindergarten generates between $3-$20 dollars in aggregate earnings. That's enough to offset the costs of Universal Pre-Kindergarten through higher tax revenues.

A few years ago, there was a cartoon (in the the Star, I think) in four panels representing the potential evolution of Canada. First, the west seceded. Then, Atlantic Canada and then Ontario. By the end, Canada was just Quebec. Maybe the cartoonist was onto something.

Disappointing to see that the @pwhlcharge.bsky.social have decided to organize their hockey camp the last week of August, when kids in French school are back at school. 3/4 of my daughter’s hockey team go to French school and they are big Charge fans. I’m sure many would have loved to attend.

In my case, it involves constantly having to teach my intro to political science and intro to Canadian Politics to a politics obsessed 9-year-old. I just want a break! :)

I hate debates so much, I usually don't watch them and only follow reactions on social media (except tonight, I'm with my mom who is a political junkie and is forcing me to watch it). #badpoliticalscientist

There should be language test prior to the next French debate to make sure that Rebel News/True North folks asking questions are actually able to understand French in the first place (I'm joking, but it was a bit absurd seeing these folks asking questions when many likely did not understand French).

I understand why some people are upset about this. But there is a precedent (2011) and I think more people might end up watching the debate this way than would normally be the case.

#Breaking: Canadian academics are being urged to avoid all non-essential travel to the U.S. amid the Trump administration’s crackdown on research and education along with fears of being turned away at the border.

And yet the current plan is to reduce the TD Place Arena to 5500 places from up to 8,500 places (with the Lansdowne phase 2 redevelopment), likely jeopardizing the long-term viability of the franchise in the downtown core.

One of the reasons I took a long break from giving interviews. I once, exasperated, told a journalist who kept asking me variations of the same question hoping for a different answer: “Why don’t you tell me what you want me to say and I’ll let you know if I’m comfortable saying it”.

1. As a Quebecer (who has now lived in Ontario for 25 years), I’m happy that Canadians now seem to embrace their national identity. The idea that Canada was a postnational country was always ridiculous to me. So is the idea that I’ve read this morning that Canada was never a “flag waving country”’.

Political scientist here: The goal of retaliation is not only PR or communication. The goal is also political: to contribute to political pressures. The American senate resolution yesterday is not a magic solution, but it is a first step in building a coalition against tariffs in the US.
