If your main worry about America’s loss of international stature boils down to a concern about Lockheed Martin or Boeing’s bottom line, you’ve lost me.

In response to a comment on this post, I suggested there's a separation of powers issue lurking here: executive branch officials come into court with a mining company 2 months after oral argument and tell the DC Circuit the court should just leave this alone. That might bug the judges.

The only thing I get out of that Times piece about the supposedly "explosive meeting" is that the Times is still making Trump out to be rational, "mindful" (!), and level-headed, a moderating influence, and above all not the person chiefly responsible for everything that's going wrong.

Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum Wants Just 90 Days to Hand the Boundary Waters over to a Foreign Mining Company This morning, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum again joined Twin Metals to urge the DC District Court of Appeals to put the Boundary Waters litigation on hold. The Burgum…

"He wanted to tear up the Great Lakes agreements and conventions between the two nations that lay out how they share and manage Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario." This would include the 1908 treaty and the 1909 Boundary Waters Treaty, among others. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/07/w...

People have been saying this in all different ways and finally I get it. Elon’s “algorithms” are basically nothing more than Ctrl+F.

CNBC has already moved on from “policy uncertainty” to “policy fatigue.”

April Fools Day is going to be special this year.

This is worth reading.

Reading these morning-after complaints about Slotkin's invocation of Reagan, I remember that way back in 2009 I had a letter in the WSJ saying nostalgia for Reagan was making *Republicans* irrelevant, and that to younger voters, "Reagan" sounded like "McKinley." www.wsj.com/articles/SB1...

“The Trump administration cannot avoid its obligations under international law simply by changing its internal policies.”

A serious version of Brooke Rollins’ “maybe I could get a chicken in my backyard” is: “maybe Americans should organize food cooperatives.”

Slotkin should read articles of impeachment on TV tonight. That's the rebuttal.

what's an illegal protest?

And I'd guess the odds of Great Depression-level hit are higher than those of the people rising up in a Glorious Revolution.

Even if you are not receiving benefits, it's not a bad idea to get a copy of your Social Security statement, pronto.

Spot on

Pipes’ account of how we got here: the left made us do it. Pipes’ prediction: Maga will overstep, and “conservatives will look back on the whole interlude as an embarrassment.” This doesn’t read like a mea culpa. It sounds like a refusal to take responsibility.

Why did JD Vance think it would be ok take his family skiiing in Vermont? Or appear in public at all?

Is this good for business?

Will the DC District Court of Appeals Put the Boundary Waters Litigation on Hold? Ten days ago, the federal government did an abrupt about-face and joined Twin Metals in a motion to hold the Boundary Waters litigation in abeyance. As I wrote at the time, the motion looked like an attempt by Doug…

This is a good question but it’s also about more than their (strict legal) liability. It’s about their loyalties, their position in American public life, and the political scenarios they’re planning for (and, yeah, how that all translates or does not translate to business risk for the bank).

A February Afternoon in the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge I put these up on Mastodon earlier today. I've only had time to make some quick edits since getting back to the city. I think these winter images work well in black and white, or at least that things are moving in the right direction. Still,…

It's a 25th amendment workaround, and Vance doesn't even get to play president for a couple of years.

full, fair, tough and unflinching

Hey what do I know but this sounds like criminal mischief, vandalism. A crime. And (when it comes to USAID) like something bordering on crimes against humanity. These little insurrectionists should be prosecuted, but probably won’t because they have a powerful patron. Is that how this works?

The farmers suing USDA for removing climate change data are relying not just on the Administrative Procedure Act but also on FOIA.

2018: Apple commits to investing $350 billion in US manufacturing over five years 2021: Apple commits to $430B and 20,000 new jobs over five years Today: Apple commits to $500B and 20,000 jobs over the next four years This doesn’t look like the big Trump win it’s being made out to be.

* Photographed a demonstration in Union Square * Blogged about Doug Burgum’s corruption * Connected someone with a consulting project that wasn’t right for me * Learned some new stuff in Adobe Lightroom * Tried to figure out how to store a kayak in my Brooklyn place

Stuffed suits like Rich McCormick are not just cowards; they are also bad faith actors. No reason to listen to their tripe. Shout them down, bring noisemakers, bang pots and pans, play tubas, kazoos, and trombones, sing, answer every word with a bronx cheer.
