What a time to be an American studies specialist, amirite? 🙃

So it begins. Początek semestru w środę. 🤐

Fun fact, this is the main line of defence from Spotify when it's being criticized from paying artists too little. We should be focusing on the specificity of labels and their contracts with musicians more.

I saw A Complete Unknown. And, frankly, go watch I'm Not There. It's too long, a bit dull. Yes, a solid performence by Chalamet, but it trivializes Dylan, making him a wax figure in a Hollywood music bio romance historical drama.Popularizing Dylan? Yes. Something else? No. And long live Pete Seeger.

I'm listening to Weyes Blood's Titanic Rising, a modern classic from 2019. Near the end, there's this song, Wild Time. I don't know if it's only me, but I can hear King Crimson's Moonchild there. It tells me two things: the timeless character of KC's classic and the longing appeal of this aesthetic.

Even though I firmly believe Magdalene was FKA Twigs's artistic apex, which will be hard to beat, EUSEXUA brings another layer of artistic complexity to her career. It's a beautiful achievement, confirming she is one of the most interesting voices in contemporary avant-pop and electro-pop.

There is something utterly fascinating about early progressive rock. The song is 54 years old, and it sounds old, but at the same time, its appeal is mesmerizing. Even though I understand how people may its pompous character, the complexity, creativity, and potential in it charms to this day.

Today's quick evening trip from Vavuniya (VCCV) to China Bay (VCCT). #MicrosoftFlightSimulator2024

Yes, music is fun, but I flew from Santa Barbara (KSBA) to Palmdale (KPMD) yesterday and took some awesome photos. #MicrosoftFlightSimulator2024

it feels like when Bowie died.

Time changes perspective. When I was in high school, IMD was a modern take on thr Prodigy. Now - I believe - it became a part of their canon. And oh my, it has aged so well.

Did I mention I love Microsoft Flight Simulator? All these are screenshots taken today.

Labrini Girls' debut, Who Let the Dogs Out, is a fun, punk adventure—very punk. It contains many interesting ideas without any extraordinary measures, but it nicely fits as a commentary on modern society while maintaining the raw energy and not being over-intellectualized.

Franz Ferdinand has released their new album, the Human Fear. There's nothing new, just another fun, danceable LP, which doesn't revolutionize anything, or reach the same heights as their first two records. But if you love them, you'll love this album.

Such articles remind you that popular culture and social media are often bubbles and distorted visions of local realities. This is why a knowledgeable and critical consumption of popular media matters so much. We cannot overlook what's behind the glitter of popcultural imagery.

One of the best things about Amazon's The Rings of Power is its soundtrack by @bearmccreary.bsky.social. I'm so thrilled this record was recently added to my collection, and proudly stands next to Season One soundtrack.

Debi Tirar Mas Fotos sounds like a sentimental love letter to BB's homeland. I think I've heard that somewhere before. It resembles the general sound of 2024's biggest hits, segueing us softly into 2025. While it's sentimental, it is also raw, sincere, and a concept album that's fun to listen to.

It's been 5 days, and we already have an AOTY contender. DTMF may as well be Bad Bunny's career highlight. As a person who may spend considerable time researching music geography and regionalisms, I find this a wonderful piece of art.

It's always fun to look back at the previous year and revisit all those emotions and music related to them. To live it again, to learn from those experiences is to prepare yourself for what's to come. Here's my soundtrack to 2024, and my 20 favorite LPs. macieksmolka.wordpress.com/2025/01/03/t...

I've made a playlist with my favorite songs of 2024. I hope you'll enjoy it, or maybe even discover something interesting! open.spotify.com/playlist/4qG...

My most listened-to LPs of 2024. Here's to many more in 2025.

December was a very rough month for me, so I found comfort in the lack of compromises and some throwbacks.

I tool a break from social media for the past two weeks. And I really recommend it to you all. Still, it doesn't mean I abandoned my annual AOTY list, which is now in works - per usual, it'll be published on January 3.

Call for Papers alert! IASPM CESE invites you to the first international conference organized by the IASPM Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe branch, which will take place on September 11-12, 2025, in Kraków, Poland. The submission deadline is January 31. You can find all the details below!

I can't agree with this. I'd say that To Pimp a Butterfly is an album that changed everything. Brat is a one-off summer trend that will pass like Espresso or Get Lucky. Having so many accolades is not something that should be an indicator of long-term cultural relevance in times of liquid modernity.

Day 11: a song that reminds you of summer. It might be an unpopular opinion, but I love Radical Optimism. Not because it's great art, but because it's fun for me. I remember blasting this song in my 19-year-old Toyota on a highway at the height of last summer. Blissful. #31DaySongChallengeEOTY2024

Day 10: a song from your childhood. Classic rock was a huge part of my childhood with Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and King Crimson being my favorite bands when I was, like, 6? Maybe 7? Deep Purple was a part of this canon, and the more extreme the song the better. #31DaySongChallengeEOTY2024

Just so you know, jazz is not dead. It's just not mainstream. But it doesn't mean it's not good, valuable, meaningful, inspiring or influential. Jazz is much more than Davis, Coltrane, or Hancock. Step out of your comfort zone, and listen to some contemporary jazz.

Day 9: a song title that has a lot of words. A title is much more than just a title. It tells a story and shows the direction in which you can comprehend or appreciate the work of art. Sufjan understands that and enhances his storytelling through titles. Pure love. #31DaySongChallengeEOTY2024

Day 8: an underrated song. No Line on the Horizon is my favorite U2 album right after POP. There, I said it. It's experimental, engaging, enigmatic, and enjoyable. It's criminal it doesn't get more recognition as a piece of art. The title song is an embodiment of such. #31DaySongChallengeEOTY2024

Day 7: a song you like, but don't like an artist. Contrary to popular belief disco polo has a lot of great songs with a deeper social or cultural meaning. This one is a simple love song. But the chord progression is an embodiment of disco polo's characteristic nostalgia. #31DaySongChallengeEOTY2024

The end of an era. Hehe.

Is it just me, or do you guys also confuse beabadoobee with badbadnotgood when you look at their names? *unfunny popular music joke alert*

YES, finally. The film dialogue contextualizes the songs in a great way, but they're too incoherent to listen to that way. My biggest issue with this rendition of Defying Gravity is that it's too stretched for the purposes of the movie. Such a move makes the song more approachable.

Day 6: a song you don't like, but like an artist. I'm a huge QotSA fan, but Villains my least favorite LP by them. Yes, The Way You Used To Do is a fun song, but it's too EODM, too generic, not heavy enough, much less creative Little Sister, totally skippable. #31DaySongChallengeEOTY2024

Day 5: a song from a genre you don't listen to normally. I love metal, but I never really got to be a fan of doom metal. But songs like these remind me how much pleasure you can get from listening to some very hard, slow, and monstrous tracks. #31DaySongChallengeEOTY2024

Day 4: a song you know all the words to. This is one of my favorite songs of 2023, which at the same time quickly became one of my favorite Paramore songs. And the lyrics are awesome, especially the juggernaut of a chorus. #31DaySongChallengeEOTY2024

It's fascinating to see Dylan call Newport gig as a "fiasco".

Day 3: a song that makes you cry. Every. Single. Time. I loved its power and message ever since I've heard it for the first time all those years ago. And if you're aware of the role it plays in the story, it's even more empowering, or even emancipating. Happy tears! #31DaySongChallengeEOTY2024
