Got reviews back this am on a paper where I am a co-author. It still amazes me when academics are so rude. #Reviewer2 is live & well (although they were reviewer 1 this time). We will look at the constructive reviewers comments but as for the other, it’s hard to respect your academic judgement.

🧵Who is opposing the Trump administration? I analysed 76 actions of the administration since inauguration and then searched for *meaningful* opposition to each. I grouped the types of opposition and considered what we can learn from both them & actions where opposition has been lacking 1/24

BBC just released damning research on AI assistants' news accuracy. Results: 51% of AI responses had significant issues. 19% introduced errors when citing BBC. 13% misquoted or made up BBC content entirely. 🤐🤐 www.bbc.co.uk/aboutthebbc/... via @ezraeeman.bsky.social

This is so good.

Kind of a long title but this movie sounds wild

SHARE WIDELY. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. With mass deportations starting today across the country, it is vitally important - for both citizens and non-citizens - to know your rights. You have the right to remain silent. Assert it. You have the right to a lawyer. Ask for one. (1/3)

It’s with a heavy heart that I’ve been forced to write to Claire Coutinho again.

Charles Spencer detailed his abuse at his prep school Maidwell Hall in his recent book and that led to a police inquiry which has now caused the school - which was long operating at a loss - to close. The Conservative press, naturally, blame it all on Starmer. And VAT.

NEW: Andrew Norfolk broke the grooming gang story, 15 years ago. His exclusive interview on today’s News Agents is deeply powerful, not least for his anger about those political figures now exploiting it and the victims for their own purposes. Listen 👇 podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/t...

There are 3.4 million girls 14 and under in England. Elon Musk just wrote that 1 out of every 13 such girls is right now being “systematically raped by migrant gangs.” The man has gone utterly insane. He’s a sociopath. His latest post is—unambiguously—neo-Nazi rhetoric intended to incite violence.

Nigel Farage says Elon Musk is "an absolute hero figure" to young Britons. Simply untrue for most young people YouGov had Musk approval 18-24 approve 10% disapprove 74% 25-49 Approve 20% Disapprove 64%

Back to work tomorrow, have taken the 10days to relax and decompress. Hoping 2025 will not be as challenging at work as 2024, but please can it at least provide some research space?! At least these 2 days should be quieter than normal! #academicchatter #optimistic

Norwegian painter Edvard Munch spent many summers at the coastal village of Åsgårdstrand, where he bought a house (now a museum). He said that "to walk in Åsgårdstrand is like walking among my paintings”. Here’s his ‘Moonlight’ (1895), and the scenery there (photo: Kavlie-Borge)

"A request made through ChatGPT, an AI-based virtual assistant, consumes 10 times the electricity of a Google Search" This isn't a game. This is accelerated destruction via huge usage of power, water, resources etc. Stop using it - especially for messing about!! www.unep.org/news-and-sto...

Breaking news: A 2020 paper that sparked widespread enthusiasm for hydroxychloroquine as a #COVID19 treatment has been retracted, following campaigning by scientists who alleged the research contained major scientific flaws and may have breached ethics regulations. scim.ag/4iR9bQ6

3 more days to go, mentally I am spent, this semester has taken its toll! Hoping having a few weeks respite will help but there’s not a lot of optimism currently in academia I fear. Without research time I am not sure what the benefits of the job are for me. #academicchatter

Thoughts on m how we solve the housing problem: We need more houses. So we need more builders. So we need more training. But there aren't enough colleges, teachers or students. So we need immigration. So we need to undo Brexit. 1/*

Switching from internet to zoom phone so campus can save money. With new training, websites etc. How often do campuses think through: "we save $100,000, but use 1.5hrs of prof time with 5,000 profs getting paid $75/hr and.. oh shit we just spent $550K on salary to save $100K" .. I'm guessing never

Ok who doesn’t love Spotify day! At least this year as I got my teen his own acc it does reflect my music tastes!

This is the outcome I support but understand others disappointment and concern. I wish it could be part of a much broader review and changes to ensure all are able to have a “good death”, something that is not currently the case for so many. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c9...

Vaccines against COVID-19 saved over 20 million lives in the first year alone, according to a study in Lancet Infectious Diseases. Anti vaxxers conveniently ignore such stats.

Great service from @markrubin.bsky.social to help this place grow for #Psychology At www.bps.org.uk/psychologist we have 37 years of open access articles, interviews and much more. Please help us share far and wide!

With a fully remote team of just 20 employees, Bluesky has surpassed 20 million users in its first year since opening to the public and is stealing thunder from rivals hundreds of times its size. At a time when conventional wisdom among bosses is that workers must be in-person to be productive.

UK colleagues, what is the going rate for PhD examination? I know we don’t do it for the money but just been told a uni is paying me £200 (pre tax deductions) to examine their student & tbh it has just made me wonder why we do it. Is this a typical fee, am I being unreasonable? #AcademicChatter

To be clear: It's £1m untaxed, plus £325k of standard tax free inheritance. You can double that if the farmer is married. So farmers can hand down £2.65m tax free, and their kids pay 20% on everything else. Tax on your job is 40% over £50k "Land owner" is not a job 🧵

"The spectre of Brexit is simply becoming too big to ignore. An unprecedented statement from the Bank of England this week finally broke the Brexit omerta when Governor Andrew Bailey directly blamed slow growth on the UK’s decision to leave the EU." 🇬🇧🇪🇺 www.thelondoneconomic.com/politics/kei...

During the week a dog named Bunsen texts his family. Those texts are saved. Today they are shared. It’s Texts From Bunsen!!

Spent the night in A&E - 5hrs 45min for X-ray & sutures in teens hand. The #NHS is broken, understaffed but also inefficient processes. Not sure I have faith things will improve. Staff are doing their best no doubt, but not sure extent they aware where things should/could change. #health
