A suivre...

In the fabulous contemporary history of North African urban music, there is that of 'Chaabi'. It's a very special story, with a distinctive sound that marks an imaginary world shared by both sides of the Mediterranean. This fine documentary is a wonderful discovery. The French Research Institute in Iran and its precious collection of documents ransacked, in Tehran Considered a reference center for many researchers, the IFRI was placed under seal in 2023. It's the heralded end of one era and certainly the start of another, calling for a decentring of knowledge.

What else ?

Every time I listen to this piece of music again, I think that sometimes beauty has a sound. In this very short excerpt, we can appreciate the sound color of the Sarud accompanied by two Saz. An orchestral configuration common to Baluchi possession rituals like the Guati. Happy sunday to all !

Why music is more than just music ? Below, a short extract from a musical joust in Oman. While the musical know-how is clearly visible, it also reveals the symbolic richness of a society. In this simple polyrhythm, 2 drummers responding to each other musically, while inserting off-beats. 1/2

Saudi Arabia wants to 'reinvent' its national anthem and is turning to a player in the music industry for this. 'The syndrome of the society of the spectacle' has spread widely in this region of the world. It is true, however, that "the invention of tradition" is not the prerogative of just a few...
