Emma Bernard, 38, had been looking forward to a classic movie marathon with friends, but found herself unable to enjoy the evening after someone (Becky) incorrectly set the volume to a stupid, wrong number and just left it like that – like a monster.

I feel like “Who gives a shit, just lock the door” needs to be everyone's default answer on this. Absolutely refuse to be dragged into an insane debate about genitals, just hard no from the go.

Very much not the main point here, but still: why the hell is a UK public body using a dot com domain?

One interesting thing about this is that even in the time remembered as “everyone was smoking”, it was actually less than half the population. Example of an aggressive minority imposing its preferences and how we can push back.

The whole "should we align with US or EU" debate is like the prime minister wants a new pet, the options are a normal cat or a rabid cayote, and a surprisingly large group of idiots is like, give rabies a chance! Maybe it will be fun!

Very hot take that could be wrong, but I feel like this environment makes it somewhat easier for startups that just do sensible, useful stuff to raise rounds. The uncertainty makes it less attractive to either incinerate capital in the hype bubble or just buy treasuries and index funds.

I am getting increasingly frustrated by Labour bigwigs speechifying about how the world has changed and we need to be bold and then... not being bold

Two things I would suggest for new or redeveloped airports as a semi-frequent traveler: 1) Lots of storage capacity in the baggage system. Someone wants to show up 5 ½ hours early, drop a bag and immediately go airside? Let them! “No bags more than 2 hours before departure” is silly.

Pet peeve, but “Nothing is off the table” is not clear, not true, and just a silly thing to say. Lots of things are off the table. There's tons of stuff we would not do. Many deals we would not sign.

Like for example, during the pandemic we discovered it sure would be nice if we could *make* things like paracetamol when we can't get it from China/India for some reason. But that leads to “We'll have to mandate and subsidize that” rather than “Tariffs will make us rich!”

OneWeb can't really get its satellites up without SpaceX though, which represents most of the commercial launch capacity in the world. They've had some launches from India, but not enough capacity there to fully take over. Ariane isn't even in the running, they can do ten launches a year max.

We should stop using, "he has a point" when we actually mean, "somewhere in that incoherent ramble full of insane demands and wild allegations was something that could be a legitimate grievance if expressed completely differently by a mature and emotionally stable adult."

This, I think. Retaliatory tariffs are still tariffs, and tariffs are bad. But there are many other levers. Including, since the current US presidents have very identifiable personal business interests, individual sanctions.

»If Altman is the difference between a $300 billion valuation and a zero valuation, I’m sorry, but he gets to lie to the board all he wants.« is true, but also: If one guy is the difference between a $300 billion valuation and a zero valuation, that valuation is almost certainly nonsense.

As the video explains, there's a wave right now of less-technical users getting scammed, infected, or just confused and annoyed because of Google's terrible decision to forcibly disable uBlock Origin because of their advertising doll…whoops sorry misspelled “security reasons”.

From the “No, we swear, there are more than three major cloud providers” department, Oracle would like you to remember it exist. But not this. Please forget this.

I'm not sure the disconnect quote posts feature gets the balance right. I understand the point about preventing pile-ons when some asshole with a huge following sends them after you – but the only way I see it actually used is to opt out of very mild, entirely fact-based criticism.

I can't believe it's 2025 and we're still embracing "turn all your employees into infallible cybersecurity experts who can reliably identify 'suspicious links'" as a cybersecurity control. If a single employee clicking a link can bring down your entire org, you never had cybersecurity to begin with.

TS/SCI means the information must be transmitted over Text or Signal with Some Civilians Invited

If you accept that non-citizens have no right to due process, you are accepting that citizens have no right to due process. All the government has to do is claim that you are not a citizen; without due process you have no chance to prove the contrary.

All pretty reasonable. I like the bit where they basically go, “Obviously, we understand there'll be some imaginary spending cuts, but come on, not *that* imaginary.”

My semi-regular reminder of a really important reality about cities, density, services and taxes. Any questions? Graphic recently cleaned up by @kathrynmathias.bsky.social. #CityMakingMath

The most accurate depiction of polygraphs in media I remember is some crime show where the technician just straight up asked the cop, “So what do you need the result to say?”

Errm, really?

Even if seen as just lying for cynical political reasons, it's still stupid: she's setting up a nasty backlash against the party when the people she's tricked figure out they would have saved thousand or even tens of thousands of pounds if they'd switched away from gas earlier.

The big problem with "I spent five years at Facebook and I'm telling all!" books is that they spent five years at Facebook. You knew what they are, and you stayed. Now I'm supposed to buy you're a decent person?
