Thank you. The soldiers in today’s parade seemed glum to me, not crisply walking (I guess they don’t do marching these days), just going through the motions as ordered on a humid day when they could have had a weekend on base. They know they were props it seemed to me.

Per Perplexity AI: At a rally before his 2025 inauguration, Donald Trump publicly thanked Elon Musk for his support in Pennsylvania, saying Musk “knows those computers better than anybody—all those computers, those vote-counting computers—and we ended up winning Pennsylvania like in a landslide”.

Not to nitpick a great demo, but:
Hawaii is known for its unique varieties of bananas, including the popular apple banana, which is smaller and firmer than the common Cavendish banana. The Hawaiian word for banana is "Maiʻa," and these bananas have been cultivated in the islands for generations

United notified me of flight delay today from SFO: “Your flight is departing late due to FAA staffing shortages at air traffic control, which temporarily limits the number of flights to safely manage the airspace around the airport.”

and this is why Dems lose elections. I’m a Dem and hate Trumpism and full throatedly endorse LGBTQ rights. But the issue of sports is complicated and “when you’re explaining, you’re losing” as they say.

Really? Whenever you have to admit that something is not polite before proceeding to say it, maybe it shouldn’t be said. I’d like to know more in this tense moment in time of what she said rather than what she wore.

Like everything with Trump, it would
make new law. But as article points out the claims against Trump could seek declaratory and injunctive relief as an alternative to money damages and seemingly be well plead. And his cabal (Bondi, Musk, Patel, Noem, etc.) could be sued for damages.
comment in response to

Absolutely !! I don’t know why this hasn’t been explored before. Musk and his DOGE crew are also tempting targets independently or as part of the administration.

I picked “Government” even though I am an individual consumer. Don’t know that it matters and not sure it is required. But FDA regulates consumer matters too… this did not seem to be a consumer matter.

CNN’s report blames “antiquated” air traffic control system. No mention of fact that these same floppy disks and copper wires worked fine prior to Jan 20. Funny thing happens when you take a hatchet to systems and safety engineers supporting a system, old or new.

Pilot of my United Dreamliner approaching O’Hare morning of May 1 had to do a go-around to avoid a slower American Airlines jet ahead on same approach. Pilot said he was not comfortable and safety first. But why did not the control order the go-around first?

Outstanding reporting and insights, as usual, Ms. Applebaum. I liked in particular your explanation of how the war has shifted toward technology. I like Ukraine’s chances in such a battle of wits and innovation, even without the additional technology assistance that from UK and the EU.

this is a great video, Murphy to any reasonable person’s ears skewers Noem. But unreasonable people rule Congress. The department actually is fully under control and is directed to violate law and safety.

Nothing like DOGE creating crisis after crisis and a resulting huge political liability and then championing that “only we can fix it” at a press conference. I think Grok will get mega dollars here.

banks are some of the most highly leveraged businesses; seven cents of equity lets you carry $1 of assets. So if you lose your seven cents to insolvency but have stolen the other 93 cents, it’s a great deal.

They want to buy up all the banks, use their public deposits to support their crypto manipulations or other speculative schemes (none of which is possible in an insured deposit world) or just plain steal the banks blind.

From that Forbes article: “According to Anna Baeth, director of research with Athlete Ally, “The science is murky when it comes to specific hormones like testosterone and trans women athletes — primarily because no study, until this one, have examined trained athletes who identify as transgender.””
comment in response to
post
Thanks for that. I am no expert in sports science. Intuitively for me and I’d guess many is that there *is* an advantage .. and that translates into votes since GOP knows a winner when it sees it. Until there are more studies, greater sample sizes and a lot of political capital spent, Dems lose.
comment in response to
post
Well, I’m a Dem and support trans rights. But… isn’t there an open question whether a female athlete who was male at birth have a competitive advantage in female sports? If that is settled science, can someone point me to that? If not, issues like this are why Dems lose close races IMO.

Does Big Law really care? Some of its lawyers might but where they gonna go to make as much? (Those who have a big book can move laterally but most, not so much). This is not a retail firm. They and their clientele really don’t care.
