6:30 am on the first day of semester and I've already had someone ask me for directions. Which is why I keep a small stash of campus maps for when the Undergrads come back. I recommend.

For Valentines Day, my partner bought me a little camera for one of the pigeon nests on our balcony (yes, there are now 2 nests).

"scientists are cold and unfeeling by custom" I took some shrimp into the lab for live photography, but I could not find a single female in one particular pond. Felt bad for the three males just sitting in there with nothing, so I put in some females from another pond down the road for them to court

Solving 25 years of frustration, Daniel Abbühl managed to tag trypanosome tubulin and to express it in an inducible manner, hence revealing flagellum assembly! A tour-de-force! Preprint here: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

More recent work from the McCulloch lab! Check out Jeziel's @jezieldamasceno.bsky.social recent paper on R-loops, DNA replication and genomic stability in Leishmania major www.nature.com/articles/s41... in @naturecomms.bsky.social @rmc9z.bsky.social @marquescata.bsky.social

Very excited to announce that I shall once again be the proud landlord of 2 baby pigeons! I had calculated that they would hatchbon Wed/Thurs but they've started pipping a couple days early, perhaps due to the ungodly hot weather? #BirdSky

Me, everytime I see two parasites sharing an erythrocyte: Awww, look, they're cuddling! #Plasmodium #malaria #SciSky #Science

South Australia's draft Biodiversity Bill is out for consultation until 18th Feb. It replaces key legislation, so is a fundamental change in how SA's nature is protected - or not. It's a big bill (153 pages). So if making a submision, start reading early! yoursay.sa.gov.au/draft-biodiv... 🌏

Cool project to map #mosquitoes in #Scotland 👇 Share widely and contribute if you are there

Delighted to share our study on a major Toxoplasma virulence factor that prevents lytic host cell death. Many thanks to @parafrap.bsky.social for support, constructive reviews and all labs involved: Melissa Lodoen, Hiba El Hajj, @gissotlab.bsky.social, Karine Le Roch Link : rdcu.be/d6m3G

There we were peacefully swimming when the shark helicopter comes down next to us and starts playing its shark siren. I was very excited. Then sad when I didn't even get to see the shark. Last weekend I got my feet bitten by crabs, this week there was a shark, I wonder what next weekend will bring?

This is so calming. I could watch it on a loop all day.

Very relatable.

I didn't have 'Sheep Wrangler' on my PhD bingo card but oh boy, did I live my best life today 🐑🐑🐑

I really wanted to photograph the tiny ducklings but they kept coming too close. Solid start to 2025 so far 🦆

The hypothesis for this work was formed when we expectedly observed some Toxoplasma mutants with known fitness defects not showing defects in in vivo CRISPR screens. The results indicate that CRISPR screens can miss important virulence factors through paracine effects that function in the host.

Came across a very strange-looking Bin Chicken this morning. Turns out it was a Straw-necked Ibis.

My friend this morning at Uni.

There's so many of is Parasitologists over here now we apparently needed a part two 🙌

I loaded 25 SDS-PAGE wells today. Which means I also did 25 squats, and let me tell you, I was not made for the fitness life. #ScienceSky

When you do something to your parasites that you hope they hate and the next time you check them they look like trash. #ScienceSky #malaria #parasites

I am delighted to be on the latest episode of Gardening Australia to talk about mosquitoes www.abc.net.au/gardening/ho...

Thanks @fad1.bsky.social for kicking off the 2024 Australian Society for Parasitology course Concepts in Parasitology on Minjerribah

Well the cat's out of the bag! Current hypothesis is azurin as the source of the #bluesoup. Will share all our results once we have more confirmation! But it's most likely not a small molecule.

I was looking for a starter pack for #WomenInSTEM working on #CellBiology and didn't find any - so I created one. And since I am hoping to not misgender anyone I made it #FLINTA (fingers crossed). Let me know if you want to be added! go.bsky.app/5fp61o6

Last pigeon update: when I got home this evening the pigeons were gone. Maybe a cat, though I don't know how on earth it got up there. We also have a resident nankeen kestral in the area (the magpies have it) so maybe the kestral took them 🤷‍♀️

Starter packs are genius, but I was surprised there wasn't a list of them for people to find. So I built it: blueskydirectory.com/starter-pack... The website monitors the packs being shared and adds the ones it finds to the database. Missed your stater pack? Message me and I'll get it added.

me (weighing chemicals): it says here the compound can be "a bit static-y" lol i'm sure it's fine my spatula:

Something that I really love is opening up new sequencing results first thing in the morning and just seeing the most perfect sequences with stunning peaks. Like, just look at this, it's beautiful 😍 Sometimes miracles do happen 🧪🙌
