I wish RTD had drawn a through line of loss & the Doctor's grief (esp rage) – from his bad childhood, Rogue, The Well, Ruby, the spoon woman & worlds erased by Sutekh, a child kept from his mom by Lux, & so on – to a Picardian "This far, no further" point (mirroring Waters of Mars) at losing Poppy 🔚

Poppy is so viscerally important, I'd think there'd be more signs or connections. (Also, Poppy is the 2nd time we've seen the Doctor's "young" daughter manning a ship; nickels, &c)
The honey poppy could've been flashed to as parallel to extreme sacrifice made for 1 seemingly insignificant thing.

I *love* Poppy & the Doctor as a parent. There were so many tools ready to enrich this.
1: there's an idea that Ruby was originally supposed to be the mom. It'd fit perfectly w/15 literally wishing they were Poppy's parents, & it'd fit w/Ruby being forgotten & thus being unable to forget Poppy.
