Happy to see today, when the hearings of another important ICJ advisory opinion start, my analysis of the 2024 ICJ advisory opinion on the Israeli occupation of Pal_estine out in the latest issue of the American Journal of International Law (open access) at www.cambridge.org/core/service...

Today in Italy we celebrate armed liberation from Nazi occupation and Fascist regime. May all fascims be defeated even today!

Excellent thread, thanks, Melanie!

After (too many) years of hard work, the special issue I coedited with Juan-Pablo Pérez-León-Acevedo on Justice for Atrocities: Dialogues and Encounters between Latin America and Europe is finally out in the International Journal of Human Rights 🥳 1/

When they ask what radicalised me, I'll answer 'Mavi Marmara affair' and 'Georgia v Russia II case'. Gosh, I cannot overcome my disappointing with the Office of the Prosecutor in the former and the ECtHR in the latter. Reasoning is so poor that it feels almost personal even after years 😂😂😂

The Supreme Court of Israel refers three times to my work in its recent decision on aid in Ga_za. Very disappointed that the court did not follow my reasoning that the area is still occupied, with ensuing consequences on aid. Poor judgement on law and facts. tinyurl.com/yent792v

Awful decision by the Supreme Court of Israel. I've always found curious that an organ of an occupying power should be regarded as a good faith interpreter of the law of occupation: gisha.org/en/petitione...

I've finished this inspiring book on academic freedom. It's mainly about Italian universities but it discusses issues that are relevant for universities in the UK and many other countries.

Delighted to announce that OUP has just published the Handbook of International Criminal Law in paperback. The Handbook is co-edited by me, Sarah Nouwen, Jens Ohlin, Fred Megret, and @darrylrobs.bsky.social. Not too terribly expensive, either! £44.99. global.oup.com/academic/pro...

Friday I'll be in my home city and uni in Messina to discuss recent developments in advisory function of international courts. I'll discuss the 2024 ICJ advisory opinion on the illegality of the Israeli occupation. It will be fun, but nostalgia will be strong! Event online at tinyurl.com/seb6hnu6

Yesterday I was interviewed by Rabia Ali for Anadolu to discuss international law violations in Ga_za. The piece includes comments by Saeed Bagheri and Luigi Daniele too. www.aa.com.tr/en/middle-ea...

Last week I wrote a commentary on UNSC Res 2773 (2025) on the DRC, M23, and Rwanda. It is now out at @ejiltalk.bsky.social. I discuss 3 issues: interpretation & effects of UNSC resolutions; occupation (of course!); MONUSCO (of course 2!). Comments are welcome: www.ejiltalk.org/three-legal-...

Punishing Sanctions: A Call to Arms Against Fortress America | by @dchovell.bsky.social

An extraordinary moment. America has publicly resigned its leadership of the free world

Today my thoughts are only for the brave people of Ukraine, victims of a criminal aggression that intensified three years ago. May the international legal system show as much resilience as they do.

Shame on the Italian government. Correctly, the Prosecutor of the ICC asks to ascertain Italian responsibility for non compliance with its duty to cooperate with the Court:

The ICC guarantees accountability for international crimes and gives a voice to victims worldwide. It must be able to freely pursue the fight against global impunity. Europe will always stand for justice and the respect of international law.

FOUR. HUNDRED. Despite their most recently published financial statements showing that they have “a strong balance sheet” attributed that to the commitment of their staff - their “most important and valued asset” University confirms plans to cut 400 jobs www.bbc.com/news/article...

The plagiarism allegation against ICJ President Julia Sebutinde is not receiving the attention it deserves. It may have been her clerk's mistake, but this was judge's dissenting opinion and thus her responsibility. If she didn't write/check it, still a problem. www.middleeasteye.net/news/icj-pre...

ICJ President Sebutinde has been credibly accused of plagiarism, and the source is stunning: Douglas Feith was US Under Secretary of Defense and key architect of the illegal 2003 Iraq War. His career is defined by opposition to international law & it is unbefitting that any ICJ judge would cite him

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.

80th anniversary of liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau: "We must condemn antisemitism and we must renew our resolve to defend the dignity and human rights of all." Antonio Guterres

BREAKING: The ICC's chief prosecutor has asked for arrest warrants for Taliban officials, including Supreme Leader Haibatullah Akhundza, for persecuting women and girls.

I gave a long interview to the Italian newspaper Quotidiano di Sicilia on ceasefire, arrest warrant against Netanyahu, Italian duty to arrest him, and violence in the West Bank. Thanks to Hermes Carbone for always being such a curious and clever interviewer.

The Italian Ministry of Justice Nordio should resign immediately.

Italy is a shameful refuge for suspects of international crimes: www.icc-cpi.int/news/situati...

I analysed attempts to alter international law discourse by referring to 'denazification/defascitisation' in a paper on the Russian aggression against Ukraine: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.... Apparently, now Azerbaijan is trying to do the same with Armenia: kyivindependent.com/azerbaijans-...

Where are now those who becried about (false) antisemitism when we were horrified for the Ga_za carnage? I don't see their shocked reactions to this

All hostages home. Carnage over. Occupation lifted. Reparations paid. Justice delivered. This is what I hope for, but not what I think we'll see.
