fwiw, I believe a winning pitch for #rustlang in web dev needs to focus on backend – rendering HTML or building complex in-browser UIs are likely edge cases at best

All those are very different though with different requirements and considerations when choosing a stack. I don’t think being imprecise and pretending all kinds of web development are equal helps push Rust in the space.
