Three Commas seen this afternoon, all successfully survived the rigours of winter pretending to be dead leaves.

Yay! The Brimstone is back in the garden this morning (and, unlike yesterday, has obligingly posed for a photo).

Spring has officially sprung! The first Brimstone of the year visited Mum's Norfolk garden today, repeatedly returning on patrol throughout the afternoon.

A single Lesser Celandine flowering amongst the swathes of Snowdrops at Walsingham Abbey today.

My first Adder of the spring basking in glorious sunshine at Bodham this morning.

A Comma butterfly enjoying the sunshine in the garden today.

Excited to see how this goes. I helped the Plantlife team dig in the thalli…

My first butterfly of the year today. A Comma in Earlham Cemetery, Norwich at Lunchtime. So nice to have a bit of sunshine and warmth at last.

Brent Geese heading off to roost from Cley Marshes last Saturday.

Aglais urticae, Small Tortoiseshell, nectaring on winter-flowering heather, a non-native garden ornamental. Today, February 28th, ambient temperature 9°C.

First speckled wood of the year here on the vineyard on St Martin’s - looks freshly emerged and drying out in the patchy spring sunshine

Today had the feel of a butterfly day here in Norfolk. My first Small Tortoiseshell of the year appeared in Mum's garden this afternoon.

Happy to share we have a new postdoc position in "Biogeography of genetic diversity changes or Macrogenetics" at @utu.fi to work on large-scale patterns of genetic diversity using Lepidoptera= moths and butterflies 🦋🦋 Applications are open until March 10! ats.talentadore.com/apply/tutkij...

It was great to chat to Butterfly conservation 🦋 ahead of my fieldwork season. Lots of exciting (and important!) work to be done!

The immature stages of many Lepidoptera are known to fluoresce when showered with UV radiation - but what is the evolutionary advantage of doing this? An article, by Ben Greenaway, may explain why: www.dispar.org/reference.ph.... Purple Emperor pre-pupation larva and pupa photos below.

Review of the butterfly and moth research on actions shows most evidence covers butterfly conservation, focuses on community-level responses, originates from UK and USA, from studies using least robust designs, assesses actions about agriculture. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

A magical evening watching hundreds of Golden Plovers gather to roost on Roughtor last night.

6 butterfly sightings have been reported to us so far in 2025 making the most of winters sunny days. 4 Brimstones, 1 Red Admiral & a hibernating Peacock. We are delighted to say you can now also follow us on Bluesky @norfolkbutterflies.bsky.social We would love you to join us there.

Had a great day carrying out some habitat management work for Duke of Burgundy at one of its N. Yorkshire sites. We cleared a good amount of Hazel & Hawthorn scrub, opening up an area of limestone grassland, and finding some Primrose with larval feeding damage. @bcyorkshire.bsky.social

Red Admiral in Winchester on Thursday #Bugsky #UKWildlife

Duke of Burgundy is "now stable and expanding" in Buckinghamshire. Wonderful to see a collaborative conservation effort making real headway for this threatened butterfly! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

As I was back on Bodmin Moor last weekend, I took the opportunity to search for more Purple Hairstreak eggs. The moorland-edge woodlands around St Breward appear to have a very healthy population!

In his new blog post, RENEW PhD Student, Daveron Smith explains how project collaboration, quality data & detailed satellite mapping are identifying habitats of hope for Britain’s fastest-declining resident bird. renewbiodiversity.org.uk/confirmed-de...

Early Spring like weather on the inland Dorset patch today, with my first Peacock. Also a pair of Frogs moving overland towards a breeding pond. 3 Stonechat still present. Much bird song, including Marsh Tit. @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social #UKWildlife

I found my first Sweet Violets of the year flowering at Helford this afternoon #WildflowerHour

Cornwall Butterfly Conservation volunteers were back on Bodmin Moor this weekend continuing with our programme of habitat management for Pearl-bordered Fritillaries. This time we were working at Pendavy - adjacent to last week's site and home to one of the colonies that we are hoping to connect up.

Yay, my first butterfly of 2025. An early Peacock that might be regretting coming out of hibernation at 9C! West Hill, Corfe Castle @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social

Red Admiral in my garden this afternoon

My first butterfly of the year yesterday, a Red admiral in Cambridge

Today’s launch of the Land Use consultation is an important step. Land is a finite resource, and we have multiple demands on it for biodiversity, ecosystem services, food, timber, minerals, housing, energy and infrastructure. A strategic plan is essential if we are to reconcile these different uses.

Purple Hairstreak is a widespread, but under-recorded butterfly. Winter is the perfect time to fill in some of those blank spots on the distribution map by looking for their eggs amongst the buds of Oak trees. I found this one on Bodmin Moor last weekend.

Hello Bluesky! Butterflies and moths are often seen as a symbol of hope and new beginnings, so what better way to kick off our posts than with a thread of blue butterflies? 💙🦋 📷: Nick Edge
