If it's any consolation, your book with Oxana Shevel is easily the clearest, most even-handed, and most convincing explainer I've ever read on it! I think it changed the thinking of some of my students last year!

Almost certainly not tax free! I guess the positive side is that Texas has no income tax. In New York, I paid federal, state, and city income taxes on my stipend. Do UK stipends include a tuition rebate too, or is tuition paid out of them (the latter was the case for me in Canada in my MA)?

In my experience, the "health benefits" normally means that the school pays for health insurance (but not the out of pocket costs). But dental is normally separate, so I assume no coverage here. Stipends also tend to count as taxable income, so federal taxes need to be taken into account too.

Seconded! Non-alcoholic beers are really improving! For common brands I like athletic (they have an IPA, hazy ipa, Belgian style white, a corona clone etc.), but I’ve also noticed microbreweries starting to get into NA!

Ah, sorry for my confusion! It’s a feature of Bluesky. If you go to your profile page and to the “starter packs” tab, you should be able to create one there!

I more or less started by going through the people I followed and adding relevant people. Then I expanded it as I found new people or they were suggested!

You know, I’m sure sure there is. There’s an Imperial Russia starter pack but it also seems to be historian-oriented, at least mainly… maybe we need one!

Done! And may I say, your work really inspired one of my students in writing about premodern sexualities in Russia earlier this year. One of the best essays of the semester! So thank you!

This is also true. It might be that a successor emerges quickly and consolidates control nonetheless, but then again it might not—for the reason you give. As it stands it sure looks like the chance of instability is high. But we won’t know for sure until we see it

There are things to be said about Eurasian history and political culture as a background to this view of Russia (Jane Burbank writes on it), but I'll stop. And conclude by saying that history doesn't determine the future! Just because things have been one way doesn't mean they always will be!

The real problem is when the ruling center collapses in a way that calls into question its basic ability to provide security/benefits. In that case, local elites might start looking for a new structure to protect their position--like independence. Arguably, this dynamic caused the Soviet collapse.
