Wrote a comic once about the difference between the realities of Britain in WWII and the modern popular "memory" of it (with added fascist punching)

www.espn.com/nhl/story?id... Oh I am SO relieved they took the best parts of the yeti mountain design and incorporated it into the mammoth logo!!!! It looks good!

The average child goes through somewhere around 48+ pencils per school year, which is why teacher supply lists often ask you for 48 pencils up front, so they can have a big stash and you don't have to worry about kids losing or not having extras.

Tidbit from this oral history: "Oops I Did It Again" was the back-up option if they didn't get the copyright clearance for Umbrella www.businessinsider.com/tom-holland-...

These old men in the Sistine Chapel have to listen to 132 of their colleagues recite the same oath in Latin one at a time. It's a miracle if half of them aren't already asleep.

It's been said the greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing people he didn't exist. I contend that the greatest trick ever pulled on the American people is Reagan saying "Government IS the problem." Everything DOGE has slashed will cost America *dearly*.

Rebuilding after disaster is a shit show. The need for rapid labor in a short period of time means a whole industry rife for abuse. As we head into hurricane season people need to know that Trump's policies are making things worse. theemancipator.org/2025/04/30/s...

I remember the jokes in the 00s about China building "Roads to Nowhere" and "Empty Cities" acting like it was a dig a ditch to fill it again make-work. No, they were just spending a decade in advance for factory towns and short shipping/transport lanes.

The reason there's no working class representation in publishing is because publishing and writing currently pay so badly only people who are already financially stable can afford to do it. The problem is always, always money.

i am once again reminding everyone that the met gala's main function is to fund the met's costume institute for the year. in a time of defunding the arts, that matters. even if you hate the opulence.

So the Costume Institute is not funded by the Met. The annual gala raises the funds to operate the Institute, to preserve and restore textiles and garments, to research designers, technology, crafts, to properly preserve and store these pieces of history and art, etc.

So, I know that the Met Gala gives big Hunger Games energy. That analogy is warranted given everything going on in the world. However, I’d like to take a moment to gently remind people that the event really does support artisans, public history, and preservation. It’s not just about celebs.

Before we hate on the Met Gala again, it is a CHARITY fund raiser to keep the Costume Institute open. In case you don't know, textiles take a lot of work, care, and money to preserve and study for future generations. That is where the money goes-- to textile study and conservation, not celebs.

*me, lying facedown on the bed, yelling into the mattress: "WHY DO THOSE OF US WHO DIDN'T FUCK AROUND ALSO HAVE TO FIND OUT"

The Met Gala raises money to support the Met's Costume Institute, the only Met department that must entirely support itself (which is its own worthy subject of conversation). The Met's Costume Institute is an ongoing marvel.

BREAKING: Judge Richard Myers rules that the N.C. Supreme Court's handling of the state supreme court election violated the U.S. Constitution. The win for Justice Riggs, a Democrat, is to be certified. Today's ruling stayed for 7 days for Judge Griffin, a Republican, to appeal "if he so chooses."

I've seen people be like "How dare they do this now." A) it's always planned a year in advance B) museums need funding now more than ever since SOMEONE is cutting museum and library funding. I'm all for more museum events to raise money to keep them open. Wring the money out of rich people

$500 million is… less than 1.25% of the NIH’s 2024 budget. When I say there is no capacity to absorb the shock, I mean it.

Met Gala night!!!! Here's hoping bsky tonight is even more hoppin' than last year!!

It's Teacher Appreciation Week. Here's how to appreciate teachers: pay them better.

yup. www.splinter.com/plagiarizing...

Everything is political economy. Always.

ooo she sounds smart and hot wonder if she has a name!!!

I've always wondered why they didn't add commentary tracks to streaming services, but (as per usual) Jason gets to the heart of it: you needed them in the DVD era to convince people who saw the film in the theater to buy the DVD. Tbh, in the digital era it's even easier to do commentary...

The idea of renaming Veterans Day to Victory Day is despicable.

Seems like a great opportunity to communicate to parents and students that Trump is cutting higher education and scientific research in Alabama aldailynews.com/nih-funding-...

Folks, I will inform you that not only do the Amish buy groceries, they go to CostCo to do so. The Amish have CostCo memberships. The CostCo in Lancaster, PA has a horse and buggy stable in the parking lot.

I'm calling for a complete ban on "chemicals in food" discourse on Bluesky until everyone who wants to discourse writes a 2000-word essay on the distances between the legal, regulatory, and chemistry definitions of "organic" and submits it for grading

Here's what I said for this story, which is very much worth your time. Because this flight was stopped, reporters have had the chance to actually dig into the government's claims of gang membership — and they are EXTRAORDINARILY weak.

👇🎯 A recession...you know, that thing that never happened but we spent four years talking nonstop about when the Democrat was in the White House & all the real (inflation-adjusted) variables were increasing & above pre-pandemic levels?

All the news is bad so I was very happy to run a positive story today: dads are doing a lot more childcare post pandemic. It’s part generational change and part a new pattern. Dads spent a lot of time with their kids in 2020 and realized how great it was. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/30/o...
