I don't begrudge them a budget (I wish they'd spend it on int'l reporting, which has cratered in terms of quality bc they don't have people abroad, but they're the only ones who can afford to), but it's just *shitty*. There's a problem that exists where legacy infrastructure gets lazy and sources data/info from a source w/out confirming legitimacy or doing DD but scrub the source and pretend like they're offering an essential service while pulling in revenue. Doesn't only apply to news.
