❓When are changes in climate policy (pro or con) meaningful, and when are they just 'vibes'? ❓How do we measure implementation toward climate targets? The Oxford Climate Policy Monitor is a new, granular tool that drills into the substance of what policies actually do. Have a look!

And I am an ally. If you are too, let the world know.

Reminder: much of the current rise of white supremacism can be attributed to a complete misrepresentation of Darwin's work by 19th century racist philosopher Herbert Spencer. Darwin's view, contrary to that of the racists, was that compassion is humanity's strongest evolutionary instinct.

Please talk with your loved ones about Ruby Bridges. Read “I Am Ruby Bridges” by Ruby Bridges 💛 The first Black child at an all-white public elementary school in Louisiana. She was only six-years-old when she made history marching into that school. Ruby Bridges is living history. She's only 70!

Fascinating profile of a park ranger in San Francisco who works with unhoused residents and has adopted the novel tactic of treating them like human beings, building relationships, and helping them access resources on their own timeline.

I remain fascinated by the expanded child tax credit case study & the implications for leftist policymaking. People received REAL financial benefit from it. It drastically cut child poverty rates and it was rescinded without a real fight. I think about this at least once a week.

America has been emptying youth prisons for more than 20 years, and crime has dropped. It is a triumph of public policy, writes James Forman Jr.

“Heat pumps just keep getting hotter. The über-efficient, emissions-free appliance looks almost certain to have outsold gas furnaces in 2024 — and by a bigger margin than ever.” ⚡️🙌🏻🔌💡https://www.canarymedia.com/articles/heat-pumps/heat-pumps-keep-widening-their-lead-on-gas-furnaces

I discovered the world of climate comedy thanks to @maxboykoff.bsky.social & @mattywin.bsky.social - and it is so therapeutic! I’d love to curate a starter pack on climate & humour, but I only have 3 accounts, with @belinaraffy.bsky.social. Baba Brinkman + Chuck Nice aren’t here. Suggestions? 🧵

physics of climate impacts 101: - Stuff gets hot (worse heatwaves) - Hot air holds more water vapor (heavier rainfall) - Hot air is thirstier air (higher drought risk) - Warm water is hurricane food (stronger storms) - Hot water expands and hot ice melts (sea level rise)

In 2024, Brazil registered the highest number of fires in ten years. The prospects for 2025 are gloomy, especially for the Amazon. Local and federal governments should already be working to avoid another tragedy. My latest to @mongabay.bsky.social. news.mongabay.com/2025/01/afte...

How can we ignore the images from Malibu & LA right now.? How can this, & what we saw in (say) North Carolina last year not be a wake-up call? More heat in earth systems means more energy in earth systems. We are enslaved by growth economics, but physics determines the ultimate reality!

Congratulations to Exxon Mobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips for all the work they did on the LA fires! Without their hard work, it's unlikely so much of LA would be on fire. Thank you to everyone who works in the fossil fuel industry for everything you do to destroy human civilization.

It is truly wild that it is estimated that more than 20 million people died of Covid and the prevailing vibe is that the world overreacted. That is an astonishing toll! More people died of Covid in the US than in the Civil War. www.pbs.org/newshour/hea...

Turns out (again and again) that the best way to prevent poverty is giving people money. But America absolutely hates that idea.

I can hardly think of a better example of the moral decay in modern health care than a Goldman analyst noting that biotech cures for diseases like hepatitis are cool and all, until their success diminishes the business opportunity for pharmaceutical manufacturers. www.cnbc.com/2018/04/11/g...

Maybe the thing i love most about star trek, and specifically Lower Decks, is that characters default to assuming good intentions and showing each other basic human kindness. So much TV is just people being mean to each other.

Here’s a great overview of the phenomenal Nikki Giovanni. Truly a legend. 💔

After hearing the veredict of Penny’s case, listen to his lawyer at @npr.org saying the ultimate lesson for society is that we need to force people with mental health issues into institucionalization and need to increase policing, made me really nauseous

Illinois has put an end to the injustice of cash bail. And it’s working better than anyone expected.

We aim to hold Amazon and Google to the promises they made to all of us, customers or not, about how they will protect human rights. Their lack of transparency sets a dangerous precedent, signaling that corporate profit can outweigh human lives.

Under Trump, EPA scientists say managers encouraged them to delete evidence of chemicals’ harms, including cancer, miscarriage and neurological problems, from their reports. And in some cases, they said, their managers deleted the information themselves. By @fastlerner.bsky.social

So today is Shirley Chisholm’s 100th birthday!!!! She was an icon! My mentor was a volunteer for her, so I got to hear so many stories. We need to channel her energy today, because if we want change, we have to make it! That may make some uncomfortable, but oh well! The end result will be beautiful!
