With the help of my coach I'm testing this "Friday research no email day" in which I try to honour my research day, unencumbered by emails until 3 pm when basically I can peek at my inbox and see if there's something that can or should be done today in less than an hour or can be left till Monday

So I lost an earbud on the train and somehow it became a team activity, with three people helping me find it and retrieve it. Never a dull (or shameless) moment for me at #TheGreatBritishCommute

please help find our colleague Yecid and hope that he is safe 🙏

Stuck in one of those moments where I don't know if what I'm experiencing is denial disguised as false optimism, or just a calm confident sense of trust in what's unfolding, even when the odds of things working out the way I want them are so low, almost zero. Weird times.

Feeling terribly exhausted with life these days, but I just got gifted a huge bar of chocolate so life is good again. For a while, at least.

This if the full list of new articles now out online in the latest issue of ROLSI. www.tandfonline.com/toc/hrls20/c...

Dear #EMCA community, I'm very happy to announce the foundation of a small study group devoted to Conversation Analysis in Peru, composed primarily of undergraduate and graduate students eager to understand the technicalities of naturally occurring social interaction.

Birmingham New Street seems to be Brompton Central 😍🚲 #TheGreatBritishCommute

And I've just submitted my final funding application, the 5th one in the last 6 months. Only 3 remain under evaluation after 2 rejections. Three completely different projects and roles, but all of them equally inspiring and exciting. 5% success rate. My last set of attempts. I've done all I could.

Managed to escape reality for an hour today and claim the last bit of sunshine of the day. I'll now have to run to meet a deadline tonight but... no regrets. Too many decisive moments for me this and the next couple of weeks.

Kristen Pecanac and I are organising a panel submission for the International Conference on Conversation Analysis (ICCA2026), title "Social interactions where death is relevant: Across settings and around the world" Please contact me if you would like to make a contribution: [email protected]

So inspiring to read about Mariana's journey into research, a fellow Argentinian in York who is really making a difference.

First email of the day, Monday 9 am. Another fellowship rejection.

I will keep the letter open until 3rd March, the date of the meeting called by the Royal Society to discuss principles around the public pronouncements and behaviours of its fellows. So one more week to add your voice to the call for the RS to stand up for its values.

Bluesky seems to also be talking about Eurovision already, so this is just my annual reminder of the song that should've totally won in 2020 (to lighten up the feed for you) youtu.be/VFZNvj-HfBU?...

And the surprise of coming back home to find my very first daffodils are out. I planted these last March. Spring is coming.

Back out on the roads after what felt like an eternal winter. There's so much stress I need to cycle away. It feels like there's some sort of invisible chess game being played somewhere to decide the fate of my life and I can feel the end of the game is near but have no clue what the result will be.

...perceptually diplophonic, and an acoustic work of art, courtesy of Praat's whimsy f0 tracking algorithms and initially low pitch ceiling settings (going up from 800 to 1200 Hz did the trick for the f0 tracking later!). I love this project, it brings me so much joy.

Having to get letters from HR, complete a big immigration application, get advice from the union, get a medical appointment, submit a funding application, contribute to 2 papers, all within the same week and in this hellscape. No wonder my body feels as if I've been repeatedly hit with a hammer.

I’m (with Rebecca Clift and Ely Manrique) bringing data to @darg-sessions.bsky.social tomorrow - and for those coming in person there will be CAke! The data are from mine and @lizstokoe.bsky.social’s (non)emergency police calls. We’ll be analysing child callers reporting domestic violence & abuse.

Passed the Life in the UK test 💪 It took me 4 mins to answer all the questions and 6 more minutes to second-guess myself, but after having done over 60 mock tests, everything looked familiar. One more step forward.

We are pleased to announce the next talk in our online series, celebrating our recently-graduated PhDs: Dr Rose Rickford "Using conversation analysis as part of multi-method qualitative research into organisations: an inductive approach" March 13th, 2 pm To register: sites.google.com/york.ac.uk/c...

These courses are always a lot of fun to teach, because they bring together people from around the world to talk about phonetics and conversation. Come and join us this June!

A very attractive course, run by two experts in the field who are also highly engaging communicators. Should be terrific.

I took this course a few years ago, and it gave me a whole new perspective on phonetics in interaction. If you're interested in phonetics and conversation analysis, I highly recommend it!

Listening to some Spanish CallFriend data for a project and got totally sidetracked by the sheer amount of sequences where fellow Latin Americans talk about Argentinians 😂. We do have a reputation, but hey, we are charming as well. And incredibly resourceful😂 sla.talkbank.org/TBB/ca/CallF...

As I start collecting a plethora of documents for my immigration application, I'm profusely thanking Past Me who kept an offline copy of every single email from my past employment before I was blocked access to my inbox (at 23.59 on the day I left) and wasn't allowed any forwarding or transfer.

What a thing of perfect musical beauty #Waitress is. I've known the songs for ages but seeing it streamed tonight on The National Threatre At Home has been such a treat. Sara Bareilles' music has been my lifeline the last two years.

Everything is just so broken in UK HE. And for those of us who need the grants to stay in the system, working 4+ months on writing up a grant and building partnerships to be told there's only a 4% success rate (ask your research admin to tell you what council that is) is adding insult to injury.
