Environments are littered with the DNA of the creatures that inhabit them. Analyzing it could provide a real-time view of how our planet is changing. Time is ripe for #AI + #eDNA. Step 1: Mobilize data We've just got to point the bike in the right direction!🧪 www.livescience.com/planet-earth...

Remember in math class when your teacher always said you have to show your work? Yeah I’ve been think about that a lot this week. If you don’t share the data, you don’t share the math, and don’t provide the sources, then we do not trust you. #openscience #openmath

I don’t know who needs to hear this but in my professional experience, even the best databases have a 0.1-1% unintentional error rate (that’s an A+). & 1% of a big number is also a big number So if you have $50 trillion of transactions and a 0.1% typo rate= $50 billion would need curation 🧮🤯🙈🧪

Excited to share West Coast OBON’s Introduction to Developing #DNA Reference Barcode Sequences! This collaborative work provides a step-by-step approach to collecting and processing specimens, as well as generating and reporting the resulting nucleotide sequence data. 🧪🌊🧬🦀 doi.org/10.5281/zeno...

🥳Just published @nature.com. Over 25 years after the discovery of SPO11 as the enzyme responsible for initiating meiotic recombination, we finally succeeded in reconstituting its DNA cleavage activity.🧵 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

NOAA is in the Trump administration's crosshairs. You know the important work they do, but may now know that It's the descendant of the Coast Survey, the nation's first scientific agency, founded in 1807 under Jefferson. I spoke with maritime historians to put NOAA's legacy in context. 🧪🦑🌎🐟

I escaped poverty because I am a scientist. And I am a scientist because of the National Science Foundation. A 🧵:

Trying to manage a team of scientists during this time is utter madness. Planning for future scenarios between: we won’t have jobs tomorrow to let’s organize the cruise logistics in 2026. Every meeting delegating last person standing tasks. Privileged to still have the opportunity to plan at all🥲

Dear federal scientists: If you have been affected by the probationary firings and would be willing to speak with Science, please reach out to me by email ([email protected]) or on Signal. We can guarantee annonymity.

Today some of the smartest, dedicated, humble, & outstanding scientists I know got fired or noticed the axe is at their neck. We deny science at our peril. Humanity deserves better. Facts>idiocy. It won’t be tomorrow, but science and kindness always wins. This is their villain origin story 🌊💙🧪🥄💀

~1/3 of food produced each year is lost or wasted between farm & fork. >700 million people face chronic hunger. It's a tragedy that these two shocking global food statistics exist. Here's an example of them explicitly linked together.

Nice to know there are still mysteries in this world www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/... Unrelatedly, this may be an important time to remind everyone that the average American reads at about the 6th grade level. 🤓🥄😝

“Why do I need NOAA? I’ve got a weather app.” Is equivalent to asking “Why do I need farms? I can go to the supermarket.” www.noaa.gov/about-our-ag...

I know it feels for many folks like we have been spending years building what now seems to be a sand castle in the face of a Hurricane. Don’t discredit all the work in learning how to build and grow it- save the blue prints! we’ll need to them to rebuild. Keep the lights on as long as you can 🌊🧪🥺🥲

This is the kind of science that makes our lives better. Must get on the PCR machine egg train.

New book edited by Larry Crowder and Cat Hing titled "Navigating Our Way to Solutions in Marine Conservation" is out and free to download. I hope these chapters could be useful for lectures or readings. Full disclosure - I'm an author on Chapter 13. www.openbookpublishers.com/books/10.116...

Ok the squid facts hotline has officially made it into a poem and I am utterly delighted. Poem by instagram user @/MaryOliversDrunkCousin

We're proud to be the official recommendation of the Integrated Ocean Observing System Marine Life Data Network for sharing acoustic telemetry data! This partnership enhances data accessibility, fosters collaboration, and supports marine conservation. 🔗 Learn more: ioos.github.io/marine_life_...

The most iconic figure in the environmental sciences is the Keeling Curve, the CO₂ record from Mauna Loa, Hawaii. @noaa.gov had a wonderful site where you could visualize and download these data, and now it's just gone. These data belong to us and we should not let this happen!

Friendly reminder that the NOAA National Weather Service provides information to American taxpayers free of charge to prevent loss of life and limb. As a diver & backpacker it has saved my life more than a hundred times The weather app on your phone just repackages the data in a nice font. 🌊🧪🥶🥵☔️⛈️🌈

Anita Wray, Lorenz Hauser, et al. used #RADSeq to characterize hybridization & structure within & among 3 Rockfish species in the Puget Sound. They found asymmetry in gene flow, with evidence of Quillback hybridization impacting the genetic structure of Cooper & Brown Rockfish populations #ConsGen

I'm late to the party but happy #WorldWetlandsDay! Wetlands are so important for so many reasons, which is why scientists need to understand which wetland is which. Here's a quick guide I made a few years ago. #SciArt

January 2025 #Arctic sea ice extent was the 2nd lowest on record... This was 1,290,000 km² below the 1981-2010 average. January ice extent is decreasing at about 2.83% per decade. Data: NSIDC (nsidc.org/data/seaice_...).

📣 Federal workers 📣 Make sure you log into the eOPF system to download copies of your official employment records and store them in a safe location. Important records include: SF-50, SF-52, offer letters, past performance evaluations, financial disclosure forms, etc.

This breaks my heart. I was a Malibu resident before Hawaii. This looks like Lahaina did. And the marine ecosystem will now have to deal with a toxic soup as the rains come. Glad to know that #UCLA is monitoring the impacts to kelp forests and waters. laist.com/news/climate...
