What will the Labour government announce on Monday? markavery.info/2025/06/26/w... Will this wildlife-unfriendly government further alienate nature lovers or might they act to tackle the environmental harm caused by the outdated Victorian hobby of driven grouse shooting?

Today's RSPB report - hen Harriers in the firing line markavery.info/2025/06/26/r...

RSPB points out ahead of Monday's debate on driven grouse shooting that the number of Hen Harriers missing in action is at a high markavery.info/2025/06/26/r... Who knew? Everyone! But what is Labour Defra going to come up with as a solution on Monday? Anything? A chance to impress or disappoint.

I saw these two flowers between the River Esk & the racecourse/lagoons at Musselburgh last Sunday (8 June). Probably Treasureflower (I'm told by a real botanist) ⬇️ If you're local maybe you could clinch the identification & get a first for Scotland (of this non-native garden plant). They're pretty!

Lots of moths in North Northants last night. Mega for my garden: 73 indivs of 36 species. Just a selection to show variety. #moths

Sunday book review: The Physics of Birds and Birding by Michael Hurben Review: markavery.info/2025/06/08/s... Publisher: @pelagic.bsky.social Very readable account by a proper birder with a knack for making difficult things clear. #naturewriting #physics #birding #sciencecomms

Lifetime goals Rabbit poo nail fungus, extremely rare and bizarrely rather attractive

I often get asked to help with bird ID problems when the answer is: it's a female of a common species! Here's a poster celebrating the often-overlooked intricacies of female bird plumage. During June, proceeds from my shop sales go to @instbirdpop.bsky.social topatoco.com/collections/...

And from the inventor of no-mow May a book on Urban Plants which I shall review next Sunday (but it’s very good). @trevorthebotanist.bsky.social

Did u know? If you extend your no-mow into June & beyond, you may find your lawns hold incredible secrets. I only found out I have Common Spotted Orchids in mine when I let the grass grow. So, not only are my no-mow meadows a habitat for small souls, they're a habitat for leafy wonders. #nomow 🌱🌿🇬🇧🌱🌍

Absolute carnage in the Białowieża Wood Warbler study this year. Nest failure rate currently running at over 83%!!!! Almost all due to predation: mostly foxes, jays and martens. Some also trampled, possibly Red Deer. Only a handful of nests have fledged any chicks. @martamaziarz.bsky.social

Stumbled across a small lek of these Yellow-barred Longhorn moths, Nemophora degeerella, earlier. Truly remarkable little creatures. #TeamMoth #Insects

Hiding in plain sight, a bit risky for this Nuctenea umbratica or Walnut Orbweb Spider if you must & particularly so for the egg sac she's guarding on the garage wall 🕷 Generally find this species under bark or tucked away in crevices not exposed like this 😳 #Arachnids #Spiders

See what growth point many of our crops our in, from tomatoes and potatoes, to new perennial crop beds, basil and more www.wildway.info/p/heading-in...

I’m seeing a lot of Peacock caterpillar nests around Dorset at the moment, another species bouncing back. Also a few Small Tortoiseshell nests, even though I only saw one adult. I think they are quite secretive in the spring! @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social

No mention of environment or rural here: common failure of Guardian coverage. Planning & Infrastructure (anti-wildlife) Bill - big bump. Cuts to Defra budget that prejudice wildlife targets - medium bump. Failure to announce reforms to grouse shooting - small bump www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

And on the trail cam a Hedgehog - don't think I saw one in garden in 2024 and I wouldn't have seen this one without the technological help. Hooray! I was only telling someone yesterday that Hedgehogs are much rarer than they used to be in my area...

Treble Brown Spot and Beautiful Hooktip aren't particularly rare but they were both lifers for me this morning. The pleasure of being a novice moth-er. #moths

And the 3rd clearwing moth in three days - I’d never seen one on Sunday morning. Currant Clearwing.

Rewilding can be rather simple, it doesn't need project groups, we just need to relax our control issues.2 years ago this was a pig field, now it's natural succession in progress, alive with bird song &abuzz with insects. @irishrainforest.bsky.social @markavery.bsky.social @iancarter67.bsky.social

Thanks @markavery.bsky.social for this lovely review. Like Mark, I wondered if there'd be enough nature to interest some readers. I'm so glad the answer was a resounding 'yes!' I particularly liked the comment that my father "seems like a great bloke." He is! My kind, unassuming, nature-loving Dad!

Next Sunday, I'll be chatting about Seascape and the future and past of the Welsh coastline at the Montgomery Lit Fest. If you're going, do pop by and say hi. montylitfest.com?page_id=7644

Hey, thought I could share some images and thoughts from fieldwork on Skúgvoy, Faroe Islands. We are looking for breeding territories of great skua, some of which we caught last year and deployed loggers onto (under the @seatrackscience.bsky.social project) which we hope to retrap.
