If you see me posting here, remind me I have too many books, BluRays, DVDs, comics & games to get through to be wasting time on socials. Those backlogs aren’t going to clear themselves. Occasional maker of THINGS. @MarkSlater42 on Letterboxd (He/Him)

Presumably illustrating why in his audition for the role of the Doctor he was deemed to be too disturbing.

I always used to wince at the “rock’n’roll” intros to his bits. He was quite cringe.
comment in response to post
Yeah - though he was always a bit of a dick.

Series 2 Episode 4 Compare the alien landscape with the cover on my edition of the book.

‘The Rains of Eridan’ had a big impact on me as a kid, and as an adult I managed to find a copy of the same edition I read at school in the ‘70s (edition in picture). I always felt the Space:1999 second season episode ‘All That Glisters’ ripped it off (but it actually came out the year before).

Apparently the seat in front of me is sponsored by Danny Boyle!

BluRay!!!!! I’m fine with stuff being released on essentially dead formats, but I don’t understand standard def releases with no physical HD release. And this is such a great film that really deserves a decent quality physical release.

…. It does adventure and mystery in a magical school full of fantastic relatable outsider characters and comes absolutely *guilt free*. Dare I say it ….. Wednesday > HP.

That would probably also explain the deeply unfunny current affairs ‘comedy’ show with Andrew Hunter-Murray I’ve caught a couple of times - probably commissioned as its replacement.

Came up in rotation on R4 Friday Night Comedy - but a quick check indicates it was cancelled March 2024. I think they just got a new producer who did the ‘new broom’ thing and slowly ditched everyone except Punt and Dennis (think they got rid of John Holmes about six months after Benn).
comment in response to post
Yep. And ‘The Now Show’ has also been weak as shit ever since they ditched Mitch Benn back in 2016.

You’ve got all week to catch up.

Really enjoyed the film - one of my favourites of the festival.

Replaced it a couple of years later with 2.0L Jersey Devil Gti. 😉

My very first car back in 1988. Mine was bronze and named ‘Dino’.

I adore and admire how utterly fearless AOC is, and what a shining example she sets. She’s the very embodiment of being the change you want to see.

So next pandemic, rather than developing and administering vaccines, the U.S. government will be issuing pomanders? Ffs!

Sadly - I live in Manchester - so I’m just jealous.

What a lineup! Could this be the new Scala!

But just because they weren’t goose stepping, doesn’t mean this wasn’t some North Korean level shit that went down this weekend. A show of military force to stroke the dear leader’s ego on his birthday under the pretence of being a celebration of a military he’s previously branded as ‘losers’.

They’re doing it because they don’t give a shit and are doing it under sufferance. It’s kinda reassuring, and definitely makes the whole event appear lame.
comment in response to post
No-one mentioned goose stepping. They go through basic training like every other branch of the military before they wind up in the Green Berets. Marching in time isn’t rocket science. They’re not shambling because of a lack of training.

We do have a vaguely MAGA channel - GB News - which largely promotes the Reform party and has MAGA money behind it. Fortunately its viewership is relatively small (though still too large for my liking).

Watched that literally last week on this boxset.

Though when people talk about pre-code, that generally means Hollywood.

An absolutely fantastic film - utterly chilling.

This was on Channel 4 News. To give a bit of cultural context to those literal minded amongst you posting here who seem intent on misreading Cathy Newman’s tone and intent in this clip - here is a bit of a primer for you on Channel 4, a very, very British channel. bsky.app/profile/smar...

Her expression is priceless. “What the fuck is he doing now!?”
comment in response to post
Ok - then you’re just plain wrong.
comment in response to post
She didn’t weaken her personal standing. Any British viewer watching this in context will have known where she was coming from and why.
comment in response to post
Like I say, you failed to detect the sarcasm.
comment in response to post
No - this was Channel 4 News, which is excellent (better than the BBC), and you failed to detect her sarcasm.
comment in response to post
Yes, deliberately, because she knows what she’s doing.
comment in response to post
Which would be great - erm, except this was on Channel 4 News. And she was being sarcastic.
comment in response to post
She knows that.
comment in response to post
It’s Channel 4 news, which is excellent (far better and more balance news coverage than the BBC at present), and you’re missing the fact that she was being sarcastic.
comment in response to post
She was being sarcastic.
comment in response to post
It wasn’t the BBC, it was Channel 4 - and they are much better at it than the BBC. They don’t tend to adhere to the same ludicrous interpretation of ‘balance’ as the BBC and are more likely to employ sarcasm when it’s called for.

Cathy Newman is far from being a moron. You’re watching a clip out of wider context and are not literate in British news media. His ‘I can’t tell which of us is trying to be funny’ comment is on the nose. She speaks with a wry smile and starts the conversation ‘ad absurdum’ for him to kick against.
comment in response to post
She isn’t stupid. Not being British or a regular viewer of Channel 4 news, you might not have detected the wryness in her delivery. She’s giving him something to kick against.

Am as impressed with ‘Fisitor’ on rewatch as I was when I saw it back in November.

Me too! Web search hasn’t revealed anything obvious.
