I’m not sure what to do about this. youtu.be/9cJ1IZsp750?...

French oil giant TotalEnergies says transition away from oil and gas is essential, but has to be affordable for consumers. Then why are they allegedly sending 86% of their profits back to shareholders instead of investing more in the transition? www.earthcatalyst.co/post/afforda...

Bloomberg terminals now include climate risk and opportunity. Could this be a turning point in businesses taking externalities suffered by the natural world into account? OMG I sure hope so. www.bloomberg.com/company/pres....

There are cold possums outside. I saw two real cuties walking through the backyard last night, and it’s really cold tonight. So I figure they are out there and cold tonight. Probably snuggling.

Reminder to myself: it may be easier to succeed when everything is working well. But the real challenge is to succeed when there are problems. (And there are always problems.)

Every single stupid conversation I’ve had with a scientist about anticipatory obedience and historical comparisons over the last week has had me thinking about how scientists’ political incompetence is one of the major arguments for a liberal arts education Like you’re literally a tool without it

Tapestry cross-platform mobile social app is pretty awesome!

Folding laundry and listening to @rabble.nz on this podcast. Feeing wistful for the days when social media was just status updates for a few friends. That’s what I’m doing on what I hope will be a chill day over here after an intense couple of weeks. youtu.be/HGmC6yq-kKo?...

It’s all hands on deck! 1.75C in January! Everybody team up and do the most high leverage stuff we can!

Woke up thinking about my socialized tendency to play nice, even if boring. Now seems like the time for at *least* being pretty damn assertive. Freaking out won’t help, but it would be a fair reaction.

Shit, they confirmed the guy who says EPA staff should be traumatized so they can’t even go in to work, to run the budget. Republicans really just do not give a fuck, I guess.

Here’s how the world’s leading consulting firm (McKinsey) summarized what they heard at the Davos World Economic Forum this year. My thoughts below. www.mckinsey.com/capabilities...

People who see this DOGE stuff & say any program with the word *gender* in it is a fraudulent waste - those people are being assholes! There are so many of them. To review: dominant culture gender socialization is anti-freedom. It's constraining & toxic for men, stifling & often deadly for women.

I just saw a conservative on FB just said "people are totally overreacting. Things are more similar to 1933 Germany than I would like and my wife is Jewish but I have to hope sanity will prevail." Uhhhh

In 2025, my top three research strategies are: * Source selection * Regular and real-time monitoring * Analysis and synthesis with expert archives and artificial intelligence Those have evolved over the past 20 years but that’s the current state of my art!

Care vs concern is a meaningful distinction. Are you simply worried or are you actively participating in the care for some matter? For example, my little team & I are not just concerned about climate & sustainability, we are actively helping care for the growth of orgs doing sustainability work.

I’m pro growth, and by that I mean, I’d like us to tear down a large portion of industry and retail spaces in this country and grow wild and cultivated plants and places for animals to live. There is so much economic activity that could serve us well like that.

Congrats to the Siletz, that’s some big news! Purchasing the land at the center of their creation stories, returning from forced exile. oregoncapitalchronicle.com/2025/01/29/s...

In hospital with family member, of course the lowest paid person on the care team (respiratory therapist) is the most caring & helpful, has major limitations on what they can see (no nurse’s notes for example) and the doctor at the top of the team is an unavailable jerk. Fucking doctors! Nurses FTW!

Department of Transportation orders all personnel to "identify and eliminate" every order, directive, rule, regulation, policy, notice, guidance document, funding arrangement, or program that even mentions climate change, diversity, or environmental justice www.transportation.gov/sites/dot.go...
