For the Baltics, World War II didn't end until the restoration of independence in 1991. For Europe, the collapse of the USSR won't end until Russia is defeated in Ukraine. We are still living in the long 20th century. This will be a commonplace position for historians to have.

The incident involving undersea cables in the Baltic Sea is the latest in a series of suspected attacks on critical infrastructure. We commend the Finnish authorities for their swift action in boarding the suspected vessel. My joint statement ā†’ europa.eu/!k6cCfB (1/3)

"Three lessons for the EU emerge from Ukraineā€™s European choice: 1) to restore durable peace and security, the EU should integrate Ukr and contain russia; 2) Ukr is readier for EU accession than commonly thought; and 3) Ukr protects the rest of Europe from multifaceted ru aggression." rdcu.be/d3OXU

This is exactly what it's going to be like five minutes after Putin's fall. "A great tragedy, but time to move on, how about lifting the sanctions now that all this is behind us"

Corss border strikes do not have to be a strategic "game changer" to have an effect. They complicate šŸ‡·šŸ‡ŗ air operations, and that's already a relief. How many 1000 lives could have been saved if this was decided earlier? At the end, a lot of small, but useful steps will decide the war.

The Finns according to a US government study in 1918

This month in 1845, Taras Shevchenko was near death from fever when he wrote a poem that has come to be known as the "Testament". In translation its rhythm evokes the hymn "Amazing Grace": When I am dead, o dig a grave For me in my Ukraine Atop a mound of forebears brave, The steppe my last domain

Learning not to be cowards, far too much to ask from those who have never had a reason to be brave

A permanent member of the UN security council m*rdered 11 Ukrainian civilians in Zaporizhzhia, including a 5-year-old child. Do you know a 5-year-old? I bet you do. Imagine never being able to hold them in your arms. And Russia still sits at powerful tables and shakes hands with the elite.

Former Syrian President Bashar Al Assad ruled ruthlessly for over two decades. With the help of Russian and Iranian forces, he also carried out some of the most vicious acts of the countryā€™s 13-year civil war. We have documented many of these, from chemical attacks to the bombing of hospitals šŸ§µ

ā€œThere is no reason why Russia should be immune from the techniques it is applying against the West. To Western tankies sipping latte or conservatives howling for freedom with their guns - great job advocating for a Ukraine scenario to be prevented in Georgia, while pushing for a Belarus scenario instead. That's your "freedom" and "justice."

It's stupid, the economy

Just to put this into perspective: feeling overwhelmed by the *news* is very much a first world problem to have.

My course is now over. I enjoyed it a lot and had amazing students. It's the first time a course on Baltic history has been taught at Yale.
