“But Accu-Weather!!” They get their data from NWS. “But my local TV station has their own radar on a truck!” Sure, and they use it to fill small geographic gaps in the broader radar coverage that’s provided by NWS. “My weather app!” It’s getting its data from NWS.

I, a person who has taken and taught general relativity and passed a qualifying exam based on Wald (!), pointed out the earth is round in response to the suggestion that flight paths should be straight and a man who is a genomicist came into my mentions and told me I didn’t understand curvature

Remember to keep joy in your revolution. Community justice is also about the right to have spaces that *aren't* just concerned with survival.

If your revolution excludes developmentally and intellectually disabled people, your revolution sucks.

The NIH announced it will slash billions of dollars of support to universities and research centers. This is one of the biggest attacks on science we have ever seen. It could dismantle the biomedical research system, shut down clinical trials, and halt development of treatments.

My heart is in a dark place. I just spent the past year in surgery, chemo and radiation for a rare and rather deadly form of cancer. The research output of even just the past 5 years has likely saved my life. This is so horrific.

I sincerely don’t know why people aren’t physically stopping those dorks. Move shit. Lock doors. Lose the keys. Everyone switch seats. Turn off all the lights. Switch the signs on the elevator lobby. Make the settings all silly. Use a different language. Wear costumes. Fill rooms with balloons

I think pushing a whole new type of technology so hard it is basically unavoidable should count as experimenting on people without consent.

This is a great little institution in Ithaca, I was there in 2022, it is an enjoyable visit and a cool place, well worth supporting!

Our sweet silly girl was diagnosed with end stage lymphoma today. We are doing palliative care but prognosis is very short (days to weeks). Ligo was such a strange and cute little ball of energy, and things turned very quickly. Hug your cats if you have them.

Trying to be creative under capitalism is evil. What’s your brand? Do you have a large following? How are you selling yourself? Can you produce constant output so people don’t get bored? How are you special and different? Why should we care? Answer these questions, be pretty, and maybe you’ll win!!

Dang I didn’t know this. Will be using moving forward though!

Sigh. I have been trying to find a new primary care physician (mine left practice while I was in cancer treatment) and I finally found one in my town that didn’t have a waitlist. First available appointment is in mid June. Why is this so hard?

Oh wait I get it. People think "Don't Look Up" was about how if we don't stop climate change we will all die. Actually, the film Don't Look Up was about what it is like to know something that nobody wants to hear.

If I had AI-backer VC money instead of making a new LLM I would hire an elite team of librarians to find Actual Information

There’s more to rainbows than the human eye can see: here’s how a rainbow extends into the infrared and ultraviolet. Photos: 1. Infrared 2. Visible (obviously) 3. Ultraviolet, and 4. A composite showing how UV is beyond the violet in a rainbow, and IR beyond the red end. 🧪 #photography

I keep seeing this reference to public bathrooms as women's "private spaces" and I just do not understand it. Strangers are strangers even when they're women! We're not communing in there for hours at a time, talking about perimenopause and who's getting divorced and shaving our legs.

Mathematician and astronomer August Ferdinand Möbius was born #OTD in 1790. 🧪 🔭 He is best known for devising a surface that not even the New York Times could find a way to both-sides.

Awful year for whooping cough. Important: 1) Vaccination during (every!) pregnancy helps drastically reduce risk of infant developing serious disease 2) Vaccination for infant on schedule 3) Vaccination of those around infant. Protects individuals from serious disease & reduces transmission risk

The opposite of war isn't peace It's creation

We all live in surveillance states. Americans in a particularly hostile one. While my second advice is to act like America is a fallen democracy, my first advice is not to tell the little automated cop in your pocket what you might do about it.

Whatever happens, try to do the right thing, try to protect people weaker than you, try to stand up to bullies, try to speak truth to power.

I am so surprised at how people are freaking out about a result announcement pattern that is exactly the same as it usually is. Big cities take longer. The west coast is still voting. Turn off cable news.

Hey so I’m from Georgia, and something y’all need to know is Georgia has 159 counties, and if a county STARTS reporting counts it’s listed as a reporting “locality” on the state site. DeKalb county is listed as reporting, but zero of its 191 precincts have fully reported. For example.

i will defend anyone's right to cancel a subscription as an act of conscience. that said, this may be relevant to those thinking about it: wapo news desk was the first to publish that bezos had a direct hand in killing the endorsement, and that's *fucking wild as shit*

does everybody know about my favorite website, the embroidery tips page that forgot to close its <h3> tags

Last night’s comet.

I see the aurora! *with the aid of modern technology

Why would I waste my own time separating the art from the artist when the artist didn't spend any of their time separating themselves from shitty ideas

I thought I handled chemo well, but for the last week I’ve had constant pain in my hands, elbows and knees. Last chemo infusion was almost three months ago. Does anyone have links to research on this? Is it common? It’s so hard to find actual research info now that google is garbage

Hi everyone. Sorry to start your day with bad news. It's my very sad duty to inform you all that @stevesilberman.bsky.social , my wonderful husband and best friend, passed away last night. I'll have more info later. For now, please take a moment to remember his kindness, humor, wisdom, and love.
