So apparently water fluoridation is a very common thing in the Anglo-Saxon countries, who knew? Not me. Most European countries do not have it.

For sure, there was not a single woman in all of Germany interested in a leading position. 😶

Given that the current US administration clear obsession with the EU, Europeans are starting to wonder if they’ve been underrating the EU-thing this whole time.

The most striking result from yesterday’s German election #btw2025 🇩🇪: 🔹 35 years after reunification: The GDR is redrawn on this map. 🔹 The AfD won 45 out of 48 electoral districts in the East. 🔹 In some parts of Saxony, they came close to 50%! Why is this happening? Here’s my take 👇

The modern gender gap is alive & well in #Germany: women were more likely to support the parties on the left (SPD, Greens, and well, Left), less likely to support the Christian Democrats & Liberals, and massively less likely (17% vs 24%) to vote for the #farright #AfD #btw25

How does the “mental load” of taking care of family and household influence decisions about participating in public life? In a new @bjpols.bsky.social paper w @annanhelgoy.bsky.social we use a survey experiment priming domestic mental load to find out. doi.org/10.1017/S000... 🧵 1/9

Great work showing how people’s career choices mirror their parents' in knowledge, values, skills, and more – and discussing the implications for inequality.

Excited to share my new paper with Leo Azzollini @leoazzollini.bsky.social (@csisunitn.bsky.social) and Franco Bonomi Bezzo on healthcare provision and attitudes toward redistribution in the Journal of European Public Policy @jeppjournal.bsky.social

We really need more info on turnaround times in different pol sci journals. Seem to vary vastly, from a couple of months in the quickest ones to 1 year++ in the slowest. Matters to everyone and the scientific endeavor, but especially large impact on the careers of people on short-term temp contracts

Our article 'A Crisis of Political Trust?' led by @viktorv.bsky.social is now out in @bjpols.bsky.social! We use >3,000 surveys in 143 countries between 1958 and 2019, finding that trust in representative institutions has generally been declining in recent decades. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

🚨 Got page #s! 🔎 When do political differences by social class emerge? During youth or on the job? 📊 @macarenaares.bsky.social & I find they appear early in life & consolidate during employment (🇨🇭+🇬🇧panels) 📖 tinyurl.com/2tv5v698

Now with page numbers! Don't miss @rosieshorrocks.bsky.social 's excellent book on gender differences in political attitudes and how they influence party voting in Western democracies.

It’s lonely on the Right Loneliness is associated with support for the 🇳🇱 populist radical right. “Loneliness due to its physiologically dysregulating impact on the nervous system, facilitates greater susceptibility towards populist radical right parties” www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Now out with page numbers 🥳 Young people are more likely to vote if their favorite party has a younger leader/candidate than an older one 👇 doi.org/10.1111/1475...

I got to wear a gown (and hat!) together with the fabulous @sldelange.bsky.social 🤩

I've long seen basic income as a desirable ideal that's probably hard to attain in practice. Universal inheritance is an interesting alternative that gets around a lot of the common criticisms.

Whenever there is a significant preference gap between lower-and higher-income groups–politicians’ perceptions of what citizens want are skewed towards the preferences of higher-income voters on socio-economic issues ejpr.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Can we reduce polarization with empathy? Just published a new (replication) study with @mrooduijn.bsky.social and Matthijs Gillissen showing that different components of empathy have quite different effects [1/5] www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Today, feeling close to cosmopolitans or feminists separates voters of the left from right voters who identify with people who are down to earth and hard working. Yet, these identities do have structural roots, just like class identities did. Our short CUP book on cleavage formation is out in OA.

Just felt like sharing with the world that my 1.5 yr old refers to images of Kamala Harris and Kate Middleton as "mama" with a lot of conviction 😅

Shameless! Rutte was PM of the Netherlands since 2010, during which time the defense budget always remained well below the 2% NATO norm, despite critique.

A nice set of resources here and in the replies

These UK numbers on class identity are strikingly similar to what we find in Germany. Half of the people in both countries identify as working class, esp. workers and the less educated. Here, we analyse how class ID links with voting for left, center + radical right: library.fes.de/pdf-files/a-...

Some very interesting results here, not least 34% considering teacher working class, or large majorities saying skilled trades are working class (not disputing this, just interesting!)

Good thread. Agree Meloni is good at politics and the vacuum around her has helped elevate her. But this means that she is *seemingly* strong, bc the rest of 🇪🇺 is abominably weak. Sure she wins political points, but not sure this advances 🇮🇹 interests per se. She will just sell Europe if she has to.

Our article got page numbers! With Aleks Ksiazkiewicz, we apply the enriched environment hypothesis applies to the differential development of political interest in boys and girls, due to gendered political socialization. Our results show relevant differences by gender and age in heritability scores

Here we go 🤓 In my most cited paper, I study how left-right ideology is passed down in families. 🔑 Takeaway: Family matters for L/R, but external influences on young women drive generational shifts in political positioning. ejpr.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

This is so intriguing and in general, the tradwife phenomenon is. Wonder whether/if/where we could also observe this in Europe

Happy to share this again today for @groenlinks-pvda.bsky.social. This is a particularly bad strategy in the context of the merger. This strategy will alienate progressive voters who were skeptical of PvdA all along. After merger with GL, anti-immigrant voters will find this even less credible.
