Right, I’m off to the Osman Brothers’ derby (fka the Roy Hodgson derby). Thoughts and prayers

Great music trivia question: which song has been a genuine one-hit wonder for two different bands? (ie number one hit and then no other top forty songs)

Someone on Reddit just said that the new 6 Music Goth playlist should have been titled ‘I remember when it was all fields (of the Nephilim) round here’

McCartney’s original demo for Step Inside Love. Gorgeous youtu.be/tO3vnIWDa3g

Ditto

Wow, the complete Troy Tate Smiths sessions here…

I know it’s possibly the least controversial take of all time but Marquee Moon is really a perfect record, isn’t it? Just a glorious little world of its own.

So inventive and inspiring: Charles Yu’s Interior Chinatown is a really clever examination of Asian-American representation written as a screenplay. Much more fun than it sounds (and the associated TV show is very different but equally good)

Three hours of Prince TV appearances…. youtu.be/zPs0O9nHxpE

Recommended by my brother and just spectacularly good. So full of little human details bringing all the protagonists to life

Truly odd book by a Japanese master. Nominally about a vast underground bunker in a converted quarry, it soon veers off into a comedy of manners full of scatalogical beetles, Benny-Hill-style arse-slapping and oversized toilets

Shampooed and blow-dried cow

The intrigue of a Conan Doyle, the terror of a Poe and the wit of an Oscar Wilde, all wrapped up in a delicious Victorian detective drama: fantastic new @paraicodonnell.bsky.social coming in Feb

New city for 2025. Olá Concepción festivalrec.cl

Really looking forward to more AI-penned bios like this one of my brother on Heart Radio…

Christmas book token haul…

This is GORGEOUS. White Magic For Lovers’ Count the Rings. Pure Beach Boys harmonies. Thanks to @stuartmaconie.bsky.social for playing it this frosty morning youtu.be/qFOZmV0fH_A?...

Really enjoyed Taichi Yamada’s Strangers, the book that the film All of us Strangers was based on. A neat, modern ghost story, and different enough from the film to keep you guessing

The HBO Yacht Rock documentary is great. Lots of context, some talking heads with a genuine, non-ironic love of the music (Thundercat is wonderful in this), and tons of stories I’d never heard before. youtu.be/a55pyQsI3GQ?...

The Royal Free by @rcshuker.bsky.social is strange and wonderful. The minutiae of office politics set against a riot-torn, feral London. Genuinely unsettling, with diamonds strewn among its concrete

Need sound on.

Can this be true? There are no bridges across the Amazon? www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsi...

How did I not know that Motörhead covered Bowie’s Heroes? Brilliant, propulsive version. (Thanks to @quantick.bsky.social for posting it) youtu.be/J06yQb4lbPk?...

Just announced, Suede will be performing at the Movistar Arena in Santiago on 13 March 2025. Tickets go on sale this Thursday 5 December at 12pm local time: puntoticket.com/suede - SuedeHQ

To the guy in the airport lounge just now, surreptitiously pouring a couple of shots of vodka into an alcohol-free beer, before returning to his (screaming) family, empty bottle on display, I hope your day improves

One final Clockenflap pic…

Last show of a two-year album campaign and nowhere I’d rather be than Hong Kong. Best backdrop since Ally Pally and amazing crowd. See you all for album ten.

Peerless KitKat selection work from the fans at Hong Kong airport #riderwatch

Just trying something out…

Love The Moon’s a Balloon, love Backlisted, love Rupert Everett (his How To Fail with Elizabeth Day is a joy too)

A list of terrible dad jokes told by Bob Dylan on stage www.flycertain.com/index20.htm

In studio. Have invented new genre: Boy-Band Goth. Current faves: East 17 Seconds, Boy Division and Take That Corrosion

Guess how they’re ordered…

I had to research a lot of billionaires’ bunkers for the next novel and I toyed with the idea of doing a non-fiction thing too. I’m glad I didn’t because it would never have been as good as MarkO’Connell’s wise and worrying and darkly funny book

Our BBC Radio 4 production of Samantha Harvey’s @thebookerprizes.bsky.social winning #Orbital is being repeated 1.45pm Mon-Fri & available as a boxset on BBC Sounds. Read by Anneika Rose, abridged by Sara Davies & produced by Mary Ward-Lowery & @mair.bsky.social #books www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

A five-hour super cut of Verlaine Marquee Moon solos? Yes please. (And if, weirdly, that doesn’t appeal, the first seven minutes - the original demo - are great, you can really hear the Velvets’ influence)

Just discussing with Tariq Goddard how underrated that Psychedelic Furs comeback record was. And how good the songs that Richard Butler wrote for Depeche Mode are too. Would love to hear the Furs play this youtu.be/iIyrLRixMs8

There’s nothing quite like Mariana Enriquez’s short stories. Modern horror chock full of ancient terrors. Her best collection yet, I think

Really enjoyed this, on Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollock. Basically a primer on how the American art market was created, and a great introduction to Krasner, whose work is beautiful www.pushkin.fm/podcasts/dea...
