Data management is worth the effort. πŸ™Œ

Proud to be part of this massive collaboration (217 authors!) out today in Scientific Advances examining diel activity in mammals using camera data from all over the world! www.popsci.com/environment/...

The most recent lecture I gave on Oak Origins at The Morton Arboretum was really nicely recorded and is available for free online. This is the fullest and cleanest version of the lecture I've given to date, with some new info. I hope you enjoy it. Feel free to share. vimeo.com/1057955943

I really liked this idea of using a histogram as a legend in a choropleth map (since land isn't unemployed; people are), so I made a little guide to doing it with #rstats, {ggplot2}, and {patchwork} www.andrewheiss.com/blog/2025/02...

Graduate student Cindy Fiser, Landis Lab at @kbslter.bsky.social, took a fresh look at a 30-year-old dataset to study long-term trends in beetle populations. She found significant declines in abundance and community composition in agricultural systems. lter.kbs.msu.edu/2025/02/long...

I got an email this morning from a couple named Eric and Joanna Reuter who found a snake in their basement. They used one of my comics to help determine that it was a North American Racer and not a more common ratsnake. The photos are so, so cute

Did you know that milkweed saved American Troops during WWII? The government ask kids to go collect the pods that would then be put into the life preservers of soldiers. A kid would get 15-20 cents a bag. It took two 20 lb bags of pods to fill 1 preserver. 2 million lbs= 100,000 preservers! #prairie

Job alert: The Nature Conservancy in Illinois is currently recruiting paid seasonal technicians for Nachusa Grasslands, Emiquon Preserve (near Lewistown, IL), Kankakee Sands (eastern IL), and Southern Illinois. For details visit careers.nature.org/ and search for "Illinois".

Want some native ecosystem art for your walls? I've made a hobby of collecting Robert F. Eschenfeldt's Illinois DNR posters and I wanted to share the ones I do have so more people can see his beautiful art. Download full resolution ones for yourself flickr.com/photos/19985...

First paper from my postdoc is out in #EcologicalMonographs w/ @ecologicalsociety.bsky.social! We looked at patterns of summer co-occurrence among 5 predators at 3 time scales to assess how competition, prey, & habitat affected predator distributions in north Idaho, USA. dx.doi.org/10.1002/ecm....

Going through some old trail camera photos and found one of @birdnbiologist.bsky.social's study birds. This gal was hanging out in a corner of low-diversity CRP grassland on one of our collaborator's farms that also had prairie strips.

Introducing {wbw}, a new geospatial powerhouse in the R ecosystem by Anatolii Tsyplenkov! 🌍⚑ {wbw} provides a fast & powerful library for hydrology, geomorphometry, remote sensing, and more (raster, vector, LiDAR). Check it out: https://buff.ly/4gaWbCe #rspatial #rstats #geocompx #GIS

With only 9,119 overwintering butterflies, this is the 2nd lowest year ever recorded since the Western Monarch Count started in 1997. Numbers had increased slightly after the 2020 all-time-low, so this year's sharp drop is troubling. Learn more & get involved πŸ¦‹ xerces.org/press/wester...

Monarch Butterflies - we love them AND need them! Learn more about adding beneficial monarch (and all pollinators) habitat in our next webinar on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.

Trying our first prairie planting with mycorrhizal inocula with KU. 3 units get the application and three do not. Should be interesting to see how the legumes accelerate in the test plots.

{tinytable} 0.7.0 for #RStats is out! πŸš€ This πŸ“¦ converts data frames to html, tex, docx, typ, or md tables. Super simple, ultra flexible, 0-dep, and the website hosts a billion tutorials. vincentarelbundock.github.io/tinytable/ 0.7.0 fixes bugs and adds some cool features. Please update!

A first-year native plant research plot holds onto the 10”+ of snow that fell two weeks ago (1/10/25). The plants have experienced temperatures ranging from 108 degrees F (8/22/24) to -6 degrees F (current lowest, 1/21/2025). The winners in year 2 will be those that survive the winter.

JOB ALERT Please spread the word! 4-year post-doc with me @ SAFIRE on transforming ecosystem restoration research. The job unites stakeholder management and and research on theoretical/conceptual and methodological approaches to transdisciplinary research on ecosystem restoration. lnkd.in/dj-Zd3Q6

I would never have even thought to looking at mower type. Interesting! Makes me wonder if there's a survival difference for grassland bird nestlings.

Are you interested in how species distribution models are used in land use planning? Come work us! This is going to be a super cool position understanding how model reliability affects model applications. Creative! Collaborative! Quantitative! Apply by Jan 10: ow.ly/gzPn50UsUQG

spAbundance package (Doser et al. doi.org/10.1111/2041-210X.14332) was published this year at @methodsinecoevol.bsky.social! It fits a variety of single/multispecies abundance models using Bayesian Inference allowing also for hierarchical frameworks. Let me show you a funny example πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡(1/6) #rstats

My major project today is helping a colleague develop metadata so they can publish their data. At BEI we use the Ecological Metadata Language (EML) as our formal, machine-readable metadata standard. It is easy to create your own EML metadata using EDI's ezeml.edirepository.org

as we advance further into data aggregation methods for pushing scientific questions forward, it’s important we wrestle with the development of structures that support transparent, accessible and reliable data. πŸ§ͺπŸ‘©β€πŸ”¬πŸŒŽ
