Because someone in the past thought keeping people alive was better than letting them die.

I personally have no problem with restaurants being up front about the type of food they serve and serving the food they want to serve. I DO have a problem with nonsense "health benefits."

If you want to use Beef Tallow because it TASTES better (i've never had it), then I fully support that. Be up front so folks who don't want it don't eat it.

Been keeping up with jogging. Might take today off due to heat and get to it tomorrow. I can jog indoors at Planet Fitness but I sure hate jogging indoors at Planet Fitness.

I don't even think they respect the 10 commandments, personally. At least, not with any depth. My BIL loses it if you swear (God*mmit) but has no problem threatening to shoot politicians he disagrees with.

Anyway. Rant over.

Right now, I'm also turning down 1-2 interviews because my daughter has 1 more year at my middle school. It's tough to give up that time with her.

Especially because I enjoy the district over all and I have a good community relationship. It's a place I personally would be sticking around for a while.

There's just a degree to which they both seem to be doing this job for the laurels and to capitalize it to later positions. It's frustrating.

I've had jobs where I was confident I'd be better than my bosses, but they still had a great deal to teach me. This time - they are patronizing. They do not support the staff. It's absolutely infuriating.

It's so often solely performative. They really seem to take the "don't let the left hand see what the right is doing" stuff seriously, but not in a positive way.

Typical beta energy. Alphas scrub it weekly regardless of "need."

"Over 18 inches of seat but you'll only need the edge" is going in my joke journal.

Doing week 2 twice.

Because that was the intent. "Oh, you use rows? Why do you hate children?" It's so frustrating.

As if a quiet classroom is a sin. I don't even want to get into the nonsense "maybe everyone is right," but all I'll say is maybe we could just highlight the things that actually WORK without cutting down others.

We pilot a math program next year. I'm interested to see how it is.

What's the new program? Awesome to hear!

And this upsets me more than anything. We do not receive much more per pupil. School funding is an INSANE formula varying state to state, and even county to county and district to district. There's been no move toward equity at the level needed.

But at a massive scale. One thing I didn't touch on earlier that's related is that school funding has never recovered to pre-2008 levels. Taking inflation into account, many schools still do not get as much money per pupil because costs have increased and school funding has not.

This constant push to separate humans is dangerous and unhealthy. We are a social animal with a sense of cooperation innate in our brains.

5) Individualism has taken over. People act like they own their kids and that their actions and choices only affect themself. Even in "good" schools this attitude has a negative impact. Kids don't trust their teachers because, why should they? They aren't part of the family.

The idea school should be "competitive" is so weird and broken. If a school is better than another, you improve the "worse" school. Because that school is a part of its community. Of course, community trust has eroded because -

4) School choice. Which has been devastating for schools, the damage can't even be described. Charters - a bonkers scam, like, I can't believe anyone hears it described and doesn't realize immediately what a scam they are - don't work.

And then, if people get a leg up, they run away which leads to another problem-

3) Socio-economics plays a huge role as well. Right now, the research mainly shows correlation. We aren't sure which direction the causation leads although I expect time plays a role, it's also the general defunding of strife-stricken areas. Schools are a thermometer for these areas.

Even if they don't like reading, they need to impress how important it is. And some do not. Partly because-

2) Because at home kids aren't getting read to. They likely aren't even being interacted with enough. Parents need to not only read, but talk about stories, talk about TV shows together. But also read a LOT more than they are. Go to the library together.

1) Calkins-esque literacy instruction. This doesn't work. It's never worked. Many of us knew it didn't work and refused to teach that way, but not enough. Yes, actually, direct instruction works best for decoding and even comprehension skills. Especially...

An absolutely wonderful riff on Les Miserables. Just a tremendous book about justice and love.
