Nothing prevents us from having armed forces under EU command as an addition to the national forces. We already have Frontex for example. Also, once a common EU armed forces are being formed many member states will probably settle for territorial defense and leave the expeditions to EU.

One of the biggest errors made the last 100 years was to assume the Cold War was over when the USSR was dissolved. The Cold War was never with the USSR, it was always with Russia. The same Russia that has been a threat to peace and prosperity in Europe for 500 years.

OTD in 1938 the Austrian Anschluss. A dictator sent his army over the border & later had illegal referendum with rigged result that violated numerous treaties. The West expressed only “concern” which turned out not to be enough to prevent war…. Imagine that happening today.
