One of the best advice I've received when it comes to watching/playing things in Japanese is that you should not expect to understand everything. It used to frustrate me that I would have to look up every single kanji I don't know, but you can get by and study kanji when it feels the most necessary.

Finished Heike Monogatari and man what a fantastic show. Stunningly beautiful, and such a great re-telling of a classic tale while bringing in original elements that feel meaningful. I also love when historical characters get treated like real human beings and not just caricatures.

Basically I learned recently that raccoon dogs have existed in Europe since the 1900s because they escaped fur trade farms. Now the idea of mythological tanuki trying to blend in with European folklore spirits is on my mind. Needs to be a film some day.
