It would be a hard pivot to pull off even if Trump was sharper and younger (with a longer time horizon to work with), so I tend to agree with you.
However, Musk is primus inter pares among a larger SV Politburo (Andresson, Thiel, etc.). If he gets too big, he’s a threat to them, too.

If Trump seemed more with it, I’d think that Elon would make for a pretty good heat shield/meat shield for Trump to conveniently blame and then imprison/expropriate (like Khodorkovsky) when the time is right.
