If you wore a lot of "I told you so" shirts these days, that would be a silver lining to the dismantling of American democracy.

The LoL whitelist is strong! Always knew that listening to the show had perks beyond measure. I rode this busted pool to 6-2 today - out at 47th due to horrendous tiebreakers. Hope to bump into you at the con tomorrow!

I liked the Eugene Levy one for pizza. Kind of a coincidence that a chips commercial *also* featured facial hair run amok.

Oh nice! My 11 year old found it charming, and NY 6 year old loathed it. Maybe next year we'll all like wonderful things.

What the docuseries claims is that Trip Hawkins leaves EA to pitch a console idea to Sony. Sony, as if never having thought about gaming before, says wait you're giving us a great idea, and thus the PlayStation is born. Maybe both these things happened, but they can't both be the point of origin.

...backed out of the deal. Sony, like a scorned lover, says F you, we're going to become your competitor now and gets into games for the first time with the PlayStation. Then Nintendo says F you too and charges into a deal with Philips on their CD-i to make a bunch of embarrassingly bad Zelda games.

Yeah I was also pretty surprised to realize that folder names made one bit of difference! My Excel is telling me 259 (if anything I would have expected 255 to be the limit), but maybe it varies by version of Office?

Missed the alt text: it's a still of the "The more you know" PSA shooting star graphic.

They also don't really contextualize that Sega was actively trying to distinguish itself from Nintendo by appealing to adolescent males. That's not the story the series is telling, but it would be a helpful detail to include to explain why a good football game was so important to Sega at the time.🧵

I had to check because I was pretty sure Tristan Donovan talked about Madden in his book Replay, but there's nothing in there about EA's gambit to reverse engineer the Genesis to show up at Sega HQ with a fully playable build of the game. How did this part of the story not come up? That's crazy!

But what's most interesting about this story is how they described reverse engineering the Genesis(!) to try to get around having to pay royalties(!) and developing the game in six months(!) through some "boy genius" type (Jim Simmons) programmer who his then-boss raves about.

They're going back to Madden's endorsement of the game and what he expected from Hawkins. Madden's kid apparently hated the very first game on the Apple II, so that's fun. They're telling a lot of history but not always being very precise about things like the video game crash of 1983.

I'm also finding this during q4, holiday season, and football season, so there's that. What is keeping me watching is the interviews they got for this: Trip Hawkins (founder of EA), of course, but developers then and now, pro football players then and now, and even John Madden's personal assistant.

Now *that* sounds like being a human adult in 2024.

I have a simple ring light and use OBS to integrate facecam with slides, but I just do a single take and don't edit. If I make a mistake after the fifth minute, that is more than likely staying in. Do you do any editing? It seems like so much time to invest, but the result would for sure be better.

Update: it got better. If you just pretend the first chapter doesn't exist, then you can skip to the second chapter where the author starts talking about things that make sense to an interested nonexpert.

Turns out he was made from the same genetic material as Solid Marx but instead of getting his own game he just shows up in a few of the main series games as an antagonist.
