Not having many ties to the US, I don’t know a lot of ordinary Trump voters. But are they really looking at all this and going: “Yep, that’s our guy”? Not the mad online ones. But the many ordinary Americans who just elected him.

You can send donations yourself direct to ukraine here: war.ukraine.ua/donate/ #SlavaUkraïni

I don’t mean to be overdramatic. But as I studied 20th Century history, I always used to wonder what it must have felt like to stand on the precipice. To watch the tectonic plates of international relations shift underneath you. Franz Ferdinand. The Munich Agreement. Probably a bit like this.

Jeez. You step away from your phone for a couple of hours… I don’t even have intelligent analysis at this point. We continue to plumb new depths.

The scale of the UK’s military dependence on the US is set out in great detail here. An alarming situation if we are forced to imagine a world where the US is no longer an ally… www.thetimes.com/article/1545...

I’d like to think I’m the first person to get into a flame war with VPOTUS from the swimming pool of Woburn Center Parcs at half-term.

Can we also keep in mind that while Zelenskyy like Churchill 1940-45 postponed elections, Trump in peacetime tried to overturn by violence an election he lost - and has since pardoned all the co-conspirators in his attempted coup?

If Home Alone was filmed in 2025

NEW: Soldier F is to stand trial for alleged Bloody Sunday murders in September. The former soldier denies murder and attempted murder. 14 people were shot dead by the British Army at a civil rights demonstration in Londonderry in 1972.

I swear to God every time I open that other hellsite I instantly regret it. Currently it appears to be openly debating whether or not Rishi Sunak is English, given that he’s brown. Like. Not even in the anonymous comments anymore. On actual podcasts.

Ain’t nobody got time for that

This is master negotiating. He really has Putin on the ropes. One more unprompted unilateral concession and Putin will surely crack. www.reuters.com/world/trump-...

Ok folks, deep breaths. There is very real reason to worry about the dynamic emerging between Washington and Moscow when it comes to Ukraine. But there is also very real reason to believe that Ukraine and Europe can create a better outcome. (A rather long 🧵, obviously) /1

This is good, on why “move fast and break things” might be a good motto in Silicon Valley, and less so in Washington. www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/trum...

Who’s with me?

Funeral directors in England are completely unregulated. This powerful and distressing story is one of the many consequences. Not the most uplifting read for your Saturday, but an important one. news.sky.com/story/womans...

Just love the idea that anyone at all in this YouGov survey had strong opinions either way on King Stephen of Blois (1135-1154)

Spent all morning on set with Kay without the foggiest idea this was about to happen at the end of the show. Shocked is an understatement! She’ll take some replacing. news.sky.com/story/kay-bu...

It’s honestly like we’ve learned nothing from Trump’s first term at all. Just because he says a thing in a rambling press conference doesn’t mean that thing is going to happen. Tune out the noise. Focus on what the US does, not what he says. Goodness knows there’s enough to cover on that basis.

The single worst genre of comment piece is the kind that claims to speak “for Britain”. Invariably written by somebody with an incredibly niche, hyper-partisan view. If you’re penning such an opus, and it doesn’t immediately begin with rigorous polling, please, just stop. Yes this is a sub tweet.

Have woken up with one of those Hollywood romcom pimples on the end of my nose. You know the kind that prompts an entire cut scene of angst before a first date. Good thing I don’t work on television or anything overly visible.

I just asked my pharmacist if my ear was a bit blocked and he had a look and SCREAMED and told me to go to A&E immediately so off I go, gang!

Every time I so much as open LinkedIn I want to gag. It’s particularly bad in January as everyone feels the need to either tell you their lessons from the previous year, or their life philosophy for the coming one. And all the smarmy mutual congratulating. Bleugh.

BREAKING: Bangladeshi anti-corruption officials have demanded the bank account details of Tulip Siddiq, the City minister, and six of her family members. Officials have told the Guardian they have asked all Bangladeshi banks to share account information and transactions.

Jean Marie Le Pen, the right wing firebrand who did more than any other to bring the far right into the mainstream in France, has died age 96. I once interviewed him at his house, beside a life size oil painting… of himself dressed as some kind of pirate.

Just the incoming US President’s closest advisor openly mulling an invasion of Britain. Totally normal state of affairs.
