We wrote a protocol to quantify plasma membrane fluidity using a confocal microscope 🔬 Hopefully those interested in measuring membrane biophysical properties in live cells find it useful. We also provide an ImageJ/Fiji tool to make the analysis as easy as possible. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Bring your samples into focus! A new version of the #Cellpose cell boundary mapping tool, developed at @hhmijanelia.bsky.social by @computingnature.bsky.social and @marius10p.bsky.social, now works on less-than-perfect microscopy images that are noisy, blurry, or undersampled.

How is transport directionality achieved through the #trypanosome nuclear pore complex? The current model is symmetrical, but this study reveals that the trypanosome #NuclearPore has an asymmetrical architecture, with conserved hubs that direct mRNA transport 🧪 @plosbiology.org plos.io/3Q36QV2

Time flies... 7 years ago this week. I was a green PhD student off to do a stint in the Suzuki lab at the CZC @hokkaido-univ.bsky.social. Living in Sapporo was like a dream. The excitement for research I witnessed and found in this place was my inspiration to pursue a life in academia!

#1 Happy to share our last work published in @NatureCellBio about a new cell cycle checkpoint that senses nuclear shape & mechanics to guarantee genome integrity www.nature.com/articles/s41.... Great work from @sol-herve.bsky.social & Andrea Scelfo in close collaboration with @katemiro.bsky.social

"Given the exodus of the academic community from X to Bluesky, we would advocate that publishers and database managers incorporate direct-share links to Bluesky, and so assist the academic community in its shift to a platform more suited to scientific discussion." www.nature.com/articles/d41...

I finally got around to making a video about my utilities to render 3D projections in Jupyter notebooks. The code is useful but a bit rough so I also suggest taking a look at @guiwitz.bsky.social microfilm and @haesleinhuepf.bsky.social stackview as more polished options. youtu.be/9yOA8R03trE

📢Now up on FocalPlane: Probes 101 – How to choose a fluorescent probe for your imaging experiment. Lina El Hajji talks us through the optimal photophysical properties & weighs up the pros & cons of FPs versus small molecule dyes & the options in between! focalplane.biologists.com/2024/12/14/p...

There are now 24 step-by-step guides, explaining how to create these ⬇️ data visualizations with R/ggplot2 - I hope this is a useful resource. Find them all here: joachimgoedhart.github.io/DataViz-prot...

Useful orders of magnitude

Dune has the same plot as the Westminster Dog Show: After generations of careful breeding, we have produced this perfect little freak of nature and now it has behavioral issues

Happy #MicroscopyMonday! The recordings of the #Virtual #I2K2024 workshops are available now tinyurl.com/VirtualI2K20... Thanks to all who presented! Please re-share! 2022 and 2023 content available too: www.youtube.com/@I2KConference

One of my favourite things to do at FocalPlane is hosting webinars (well, not so much the speaking on screen…). I’ve met some fantastic scientists & getting email saying they'll speak is so exciting! You can check out the recordings of our webinars here: focalplane.biologists.com/focalplane-f...
