I mean, they were barred from deporting him the first time too…
(at least in the manner that they did, I know it’s slightly more complex)

Now imagine being part of the democratic establishment and being in the position where these fucks are agreeing with you. Maybe you made a mistake somewhere along the way?

Someone (I forget who) posted the statute yesterday that allows ICE to make arrests, and unfortunately it really looks like it could be read as allowing them to do pretty much whatever they want. I don’t think that was the original intent, but it seems extremely poorly written

Good to know. Thanks for the info, I’ll take a look at that

Part of the problem is that EVERY part is the worst aspect. It seems like every day I hear about some new horrible thing in it and what its implications are.

On a separate note, I am somewhat concerned about Bitcoin’s vulnerability to quantum computers and it’s reluctance to do anything about it

lol of course your name is Bitcoin Bro 😂
Unfortunately I feel like that might illustrate part of the image problem

It kinda sucks what has happened with crypto. I was in school when bitcoin first came out, and the technology behind it is actually very cool and has some great applications. Unfortunately it was championed by some of the worst people and now it’s a toxic subject with a severe lack of nuance.

I don’t live in Echo Park anymore, but I know that they really need programs like this and they really make a huge difference. For a liberal city, LA is not great to their unhoused pop. I was so happy every time I came back and saw the amount kept going up!
Also, is there a similar program in DTLA?

My point was more to illustrate that adding more and more guns to a situation is almost never going to make it “safer”
comment in response to

Anyway, I doubt we’re ever going to agree, which I think is ok. And I’ll admit that my argument is partly based on the naive assumption that we could just remove all guns from the streets at once, which obv isn’t going to happen.

Not trying to be snarky, in (A) you are essentially advocating for a form of gun control, which you appear to be against.

Bastani seems to be the only one not constantly talking about Trump (although he still mentions him once on his website)

Let me put this another way: until he started shooting, the “security” person had also done nothing wrong (he is also allowed to open carry of course), so how do you suggest preventing this situation from occurring in the future?
comment in response to
post
NO! My whole point is that I want less people getting shot period!
comment in response to
post
In theory I agree with you, but in practice tragic misunderstandings like this are always going to happen, and are in fact much more likely than a minority successfully defending themselves with a firearm (which would likely lead to them being shot by the police in the aftermath anyway)

You kinda just proved his point. I understand that you feel strongly about this subject and its implications. But please realize that most people here are not trying to restrict anyone’s rights or victim blame.
comment in response to
post
So the blame goes to:
1) the open carry laws that allow someone with a rifle to just stroll down the street
2) the “security” who absolutely should not have had a gun if he didn’t know how to safely use it and was gonna get jumpy at the first sign of someone else with a gun
comment in response to
post
I am literally not blaming the victim. I understand he was fully within his rights to open carry in that situation. I am saying that the fault lies the with law itself for allowing (and even encouraging) this situation in the first place.
comment in response to

I’m not entirely sure what you’re mad about, but I want to clarify that the security person is obviously in the wrong here. My point is that if neither of them had brought guns there would be 1 less dead person at the end of the day and I don’t see how that’s debatable.

It’s almost like allowing everyone to carry guns around all the time is a bad idea?

The military is using the word detention because they aren’t legally allowed to arrest. It’s a way of getting around the law.

This is where I really feel disheartened. How can we ever have a real election again when so much of the country is voting based on crazy lies?

Oh shit, Teen Vogue is woke?
comment in response to

Is there an actual legal definition of “temporary detain”? Or is that just something they’re saying to get around the law? What happens if I’m being “temporarily detained” and I just start to walk away? Can they use force to stop me from leaving?

I’m not necessarily saying I agree with their approach, but I respect that they were trying something different, and were willing to put themselves in harms way

I’ll admit I don’t know much about the org behind it. And yeah I agree that it was about the individuals in the sense that Greta is well known so they knew that including her would draw a lot of attention.
comment in response to
post
So the point here WAS to make a big deal about it in order to get attention on the bigger issue that was preventing them from actually helping.
comment in response to

You’re not entirely wrong, but you are missing the bigger picture. The org behind that boat has been trying for a while to get actual aid to Gaza, and Israel has been preventing it (the article even mentions a drone attack on the previous ship they sent).

Good. I’m really curious what Xinis does now. She’s been firm with the DOJ so far, but she’s also given them a lot of leeway. Not sure if she’ll go so far as to hold them in contempt after the fact.

Not really anything new in the unsealed records, although they do show how brazen the DOJs stonewalling has been (my favorite part is where they object to the definition of “you”).
I don’t see the April 30th transcript tho, any idea when/where that is going to be released?

It is tho. I assume by your reply that you DONT think that we should give people 🚀 launchers, and you think that this is obvious. Therefore, you do actually draw the line SOMEWHERE when it comes to weaponry, so you agree that there is a line, which means we should be able to discuss where it goes

Yeah, I guess we should just give everyone tanks and rocket launchers since they’re just going to murder people anyway

That’s why the US has one of the highest murder rates among developed nations. Because those reasons don’t exist in other places, right?
