The Treaty of Rome signed in 1957 created the European Economic Community (EEC), precursor to the EU. And there have been thinkers who have discussed this idea for North America beyond NAFTA. I despise Trump but let’s not make this seem like it’s either completely insane or totally innocuous.

While both Hitler and Mussolini subjugated liberals, social democrats and communists and arrested and killed LGBTQ folks, Fascist Italy did not set up death camps en masse during the Holocaust.

Trump echoes Mussolini in his facial mannerism. Musk is interested in oligarchic power like the Venetian Doge. The Nazi salute was adopted from the Roman and later Italian fascist salute.

German Nazism and Italian fascism were both totalitarian movements but not the same. German totalitarianism was racially based and while Il Duce was a nationalist his policies were less interested in racial purity. Trump and Musk gaslight the white nationalists.

Maybe fascism not Nazism. They are two different ideologies and it’s time to differentiate.

Those 3 times were during declared wars. To use the AE Congress would need to declare war. That “could happen” but it’s a high bar.

Having a right and carrying out that right are separate things. He can claim a right but to effectuate that right takes boots on the ground. I see a replay of Operation Wetback. The military was not used due to Posse Comitatus. And Alien Enemies has only been used 3 times in US history.

Concerned for my immigrant friends but he did not say he will use the military domestically. He said “state and federal law enforcement”. Secondly, the Alien Enemies Act can be used when there is a “declared war”. Political rhetoric is not legislation.

I also wonder if comparisons to 20th Century nation-state conflicts to our contemporary crises fit. The American state is more akin to the Austrian-Hungarian or Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, a multicultural class society.

Could it be the Spanish Civil War doesn’t fit the mold of a good war that state socialists nor mixed democracies could valorize?

I’d always heard your name and we know many folks in common but Orwell’s Roses was the first book of yours I read. Very much enjoyed and learned from it, especially what retreat means in multiple senses.
