I don't agree with a lot of the Linke's foreign policy stances, but they are a clearly democratic oriented party loyal to Germany's constitutional order. Putting them in the same bracket as the anti-constitutional AfD or BSW is beyond off base.

Wonder what NSA/GCHQ cooperation will be looking like 2 years from now. (cc @pwnallthethings.bsky.social).

Separately, on Musk's email, a point I think is not being made enough is that federal payroll makes up less than 5% of US government spending. Federal workers are 1.4% of all workers, but they're responsible for how 25% of US GDP is spent. This has *nothing* to do with saving money

So, about that “only executive branch employees are on the OPM email server” representation that the government made in court ….

One of my enjoyable, most instructive follows.

I literally reported this Wednesday.

This is an example of the fact that uncertainty reduces investment: www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=... The problem is that whilst the government can reduce national policy uncertainty, it can do little about global uncertainty.

This is how it’s done.

We should consider that the US is no longer interested in projecting military power around the world. There is a coherent emergent Trump worldview based on spheres of influence. If Europe isn’t part of the US sphere, why would it want forces there?

Trump may be a repulsive authoritarian who is destroying the entire global security architecture, but what if this is good for some reason? – my latest for the Spectator/Telegraph/Unherd.

Jaffa cake Viennese Chocolate bourbon Honourable mention to the Garibaldi The only correct way to eat the Chocolate bourbon is breaking off the top layer and eating that first. If you’re under 10 you may then lick off the chocolate filling.

So. Many. Shitheads. In the replies to this. It is not "standing with Palestine" to attack a Jewish person mourning dead Israeli civilians, any more than it's "standing against antisemitism" to excuse the Netanyahu government's genocidal actions against Palestinians.

We at the Internet Society are deeply disappointed that Apple has had to stop offering end-to-end encryption in the UK. The following can be attributed to Dr. Joseph Lorenzo Hall, Distinguished Technologist at the Internet Society: 1/

Britain is where progressive tech policy goes to die. (I know <so many> superb progressive tech people in the UK, and they simply cannot get a hearing.)

Sanctioned Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik has invited former Trump advisor Rudy Giuliani to the Republika Srpska region in a bid to mend relations with the U.S. Former U.S. President Joe Biden sanctioned Dodik in 2022 for alleged corruption.

Zeitenwende day seems to come earlier every year.

The Democrats will not be forgiven for the sclerotic inadequacy of their response.

Some of the observations in here can be summed up thusly: this administration is not acting as if they expect to be held accountable by the people through free and fair elections.

Perhaps our greatest contemporary thinker on democracy.

Looks like an even stupider thing to have said from this end of the week.

Heartbroken. Even though we have long suspected they were gone. This image has been seared on the inside of my eyelids since Oct 7. I see them every time I close my eyes. RIP Shiri, Kfir and Ariel, & all the other innocent victims. May we some day be able to honor your loss with peace & rebuilding.

"This wouldn't have happened if I were president", the cartoon of the day in #Ukraine by artist Maksym Palenko

Quite an eye opener

Beny Steinmetz claimed during his trial on corruption charges in Switzerland that he is not the boss of BSGR, the company which acquired mining rights in Guinea through bribery (guess what BS stands for). “I’m not in charge” is a standard defence (lie) from organised crime bosses.

The greatest lesson of the past decade for me is just how cheaply people will sell off their oaths, their ideals, their country. It is utterly depressing.

The Maia-1, a super-notorious ship already sanctioned for being involved in North Korean gun-running, is queuing at Suez to enter the Mediterranean and is apparently intending to go to the Baltic. Can anyone come with a plan to stop it? (with @oilsheppard.bsky.social & Open Source Centre)

One of the most horrifying stories to come out of this war of extermination. I posted the Hebrew reporting a few days ago, here it is in English. www.972mag.com/gaza-human-s...

This is maybe my proudest ever "tweet that immediately earned a block"

When sales collapse (already happening) Trump is going to declare that the US must hold a strategic swasticar reserve, and demand that the EU do likewise.

Boast: my grandfather, Erwin Rothbart, did a large chunk of the statistical analysis on which HTPFTW relies.
