For me, lurking feels the same, except everything feels thinner and emptier. The link throttling has taken its toll, been integrated into behavior, made it feel less vibrant. Posting results in either crickets (90% of the time) or the weirdest mass engagement (10% of the time)

do we know the story of the possible source code loss? (resurfacing that is the sort of archival mystery/project I dream of)

before Boyd, speed in warfare (and tactics and strategy) was typically conceived of in physical terms. How fast can tanks move. How quickly can you get airplanes in the air. Boyd recentered the mental speed of decisions, and the ability of a combatant to deal with continual new information stimuli

John Boyd was an American fighter pilot who was interested in how decision making worked between combatants during military operations. He theorized that if you can get "inside" an opponent's "decision loop," acting and reacting faster than they can, traditional material advantages are beatable

yes universities are absolutely one of the few models that has consistently done this over that sort of span! And there's some that are doing this now (like LOCKSS). Here's another example of a proposal for a distributed preservation org you might find interesting :) papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

...but for the specific target in the piece it gets a little dicey as the economic and governmental paradigms/system an endowment is founded upon don't often last 100 years. Eventually a shock comes along. And in those cases, something like public ownership can have serious advantages

thanks so much for reading! Yeah this is something I've been thinking about a lot. Endowment models are super interesting, and when I dream about founding things it's definitely a place my brain instinctively goes...
