Thanks, Simon. I’ve been having this conversation all week IRL, but no one pointed out what’s truly at the heart of it like you just did. I’ll dive into both of these pieces. Appreciate the insight!

Honest question: why are people so pressed about energy usage for AI processing? Like, doesn’t everything we do online require energy to power data centers? Your favorite Netflix show isn’t streaming from some magical cloud in the sky, right?

7/ Either way, the “why” behind these shifts matters as much as the “what.” Journalism has to evolve, but let’s keep our focus on the people we’re doing it for. Thoughts?

6/ So, what now? How will news organizations adapt? Are you leaning in or stepping back after Meta’s latest announcement about their free-speech experiment?

5/ This shift raises significant questions. The traditional way of doing journalism isn’t resonating with audiences anymore. People don’t differentiate between reporting and influencer content. What matters is connection, not credentials.

4/ Welcome to the era of newsfluencers and news creators. And it’s not just journalism, other industries are leaning in too. Businesses are swapping out traditional PR for employees with strong personal brands. The faceless organization? It’s a relic.

3/ Here’s the thing, this isn’t new. At AJ+, we started experimenting with this 11 years ago, blending the organization’s brand with journalists’ personal brands for social media-first journalism. And guess what? It worked. Why? Because people trust people, not institutions.

2/ WaPo laid off most of its PR team and announced a pivot: “Talent-driven journalism is the future of media, and personalities and creators will lead the way.” They’re even launching a “Star Talent Unit.”

I think you were! Glad we’ve got a better option now. I’m based in Bogotá, Colombia, and I work on making complex knowledge accessible to the wider public, from science communication to human rights and, most of all, quality journalism. So inspired by your work, Carolyn! Excited to connect here!
