The team is still working on it, but we'll definitely keep everyone up to date (and celebrate!) when it's up and running. Have you checked out our new whale songs playlist in the mean time? Good listening! youtube.com/playlist?lis...

The fire at the Moss Landing battery storage facility did not damage MBARI facilities or ships. Like others in the Moss Landing community, we're closely watching developments from federal, state, and local agencies to assess the health and environmental impacts of the fire. Thank you!!

💙 In a poll on Discord, we learned that most FathomNauts are following their hearts to choose favorites and it shows! The top two most favorited animals were familiar, including: Casper the ghost-like octo observed by #NOAA and an Octopoteuthis deletron observed by @mbarinews.bsky.social. 🐙

In 2014, MBARI recorded what we believe was the first-ever video footage of the black seadevil alive and at depth.
This little angler (Melanocetus johnsonii) was about 9 centimeters (3.5 inches) long and was recorded at 600 meters (1,969 feet) in the Monterey Canyon. @bittelmethis.bsky.social

The devices collect the eDNA, and then after recovery, the team removes filters and sends them out for sequencing. But eventually, we plan to do the sequencing directly on the ESP.
