the trump admin has laid off the national falconer from their job of being heard by the falcon

I've spent the weekend arguing with an in-law who is * generally pro-what-trump-is-doing * not a full throated trump supporter * veteran, blue-collar about specific policies. tl;dr - some points I've made hit home, but making the point that oligarchs aren't looking out for you is surprisingly hard.

One of my party facts is that according to polls, Americans believe foreign aid is about 25% of the federal budget and on average that it *should* be about 10%. The actual number is less than 1%. Foreign aid has long been a boogey man of the right, so it's not surprising they're vilifying it now.

Shades of arguing religion with my family. I'm no longer religious, but they sent me to the Christian school for a decade, and I'm a good student, so don't try to come at me with biblical justification of hate.

1. Breaking News: Donald Trump has signed an executive order targeting trans youth and teachers in schools who teach for them. It goes after "social transition" and threatens arrests. I will go through line by line, as I have the last 3 nights. Find the EO here: www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

We're going to a wedding and the boy is getting a suit. I told him he looked like he was ready to join a ska band, and the kids asked me what that was. Big mistake.

Why are anti-trans polices only ever seen as a problem when they start affecting cis people, but never because They target trans people

The price of eggs in the US is spiking, mostly due to #H5N1 bird flu. Solving the problem requires urgent, important communications from the CDC & FDA* and rapid development of research by the NIH** * Currently paused by Executive Order ** Grant reviews now all canceled www.kcur.org/news/2025-01...

Would kill for a global, persisted across all Apple devices setting that says "While I enjoy your hardware, I do not believe that most of your software features work at a level of consistency that will bring me joy, so turn off anything not core to the device experience".

Plenty of lenses through which to view Trump's embrace by both the working class and tech billionaires, but I think one common thread is the Revenge of White Men. Covid, BLM, and gender critiques challenged their status and sense of entitlement, and they want it back. www.axios.com/2025/01/10/m...

Got an email asking me to sign the petition to "save downtown menlo park" www.savedowntownmenlo.org. And... this is the opposite of saving downtown menlo. Is there a petition I can sign to ask for the opposite?

I’m expecting the next phase of US history to be kayfabe vs. physics.

As an ex-Nest employee, this is a flashback to 10 years ago when home automation was still a promising market (the Nest thermostat is still a beautiful device), and then... the entire market stalled out, not least because so much shitty product flooded the zone.

Mulling over the encounter last night where I had to leap into a yard to avoid being hit by middle schoolers riding bikes at high speed on a sidewalk: cyclists on sidewalks irritate me deeply, but not as much as the car infrastructure that pushes them to ride on sidewalks.
