Relax everyone, he’s just trolling us…

They want us to be afraid. They want us to hesitate. They want us to fear their next move. Fuck that shit. We are just getting started fighting.

“In some ways that’s even more chilling than firing the four stars,” Rosa Brooks, a professor at Georgetown Law. “It’s what you do when you’re planning to break the law: you get rid of any lawyers who might try to slow you down.” By NYT Greg Jaffe www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/u...

this is such a great idea 👇👇👇

📢 “He’s trying to steal Medicaid to enrich himself. He’s gutting NASA to line his pockets with SpaceX. He’s looting everything good in America for private profit.” - @aoc.bsky.social at today’s #SaveOurServices NYC rally. The fight isn’t over. Join us: go.savepublicservices.com

Elon Musk recently posted that another lawyer and I are “undermining civilization.” He asks if we suffered childhood trauma and suggests we are suffering from “generational trauma.” Tomorrow, Democracy Docket will publish my response. Sign up now to receive. www.democracydocket.com/me-subscribe...

Said it in 2016 and will repeat it for the millionth time. Trump is a Russian owned piece of shit and has been owned by them for decades. His goal is to destroy America & this time w/o guardrails that’s exactly what he is doing.

Let's start calling it what it is.

Scientists fear that Trump’s DEI crackdown will reshape who can participate in science for years to come, drain creativity, limit the scope of projects, and lead to worse research. “It is common sense that to have the best science, we need the broadest, most inclusive environment."

As the oligarchy is conspicuously exposed, Americans will see as clearly as we did at the end of the first Gilded Age that we have no option but to take back power. Only then can we continue the essential work of America.

Remember: If we allow ourselves to fall into fatalism, or wallow in disappointment, or become resigned to what is rather than what should be, we will lose the long game. The greatest enemy of positive social change is cynicism about what can be changed.

These are research grants awarded through evaluation of their merits by scientific peers, in which the investigators are carrying out important, ground-breaking work. They're being targeted because, as required by NSF guidelines, they include some investment in benefits for the broader community.

I have work to do but I'm distracted by watching US scientific progress & leadership being irreversibly undermined because a few unelected malcontents are penalizing researchers for following legal requirements set out by congressional orders to augment basic research with benefits to society.

In the past weeks, the Trump administration has purged federal law enforcement agencies of prosecutors and investigators who’d been pursuing white supremacist groups that had been listed among the most dangerous threats to national security. By @hannahallam.bsky.social

i am going to put a finer point on this: executive orders are not laws. and they certainly are not royal decrees. they are interpretations of existing law for the purposes of enforcement. the fact that so many people are treating them as laws is actually driving me a bit insane.

Elon Musk standing behind the Oval Office desk with his kid on his shoulders and admitting to reporters that he spreads misinformation while Trump sits there in a confused haze. It’s the perfect image of everything that’s wrong right now

extremely glad to see media coverage of this because it is monumentally fucked up

🧵 If you’re applauding the abolishment of the Department of Education, you need to do a little research. You have ZERO clue what the DOE actually does. Here’s a reality check on what the Department of Education actually does: (1/14)

Remember when we found out that Russian intelligence services are funding several prominent right-wing media figures and then the story just blew away like a feather in the wind and no one ever talked about it again?

“Delete” the CFPB & IRS. Abolish bank regulators. Gut Social Security and Medicare. The Musk-Trump administration’s plots all boil down to the same thing: swindle working people, funnel money to the ultra-rich.

Hell yeah. Hold the line. This is what we need people to do. Slow things down, don’t comply in advance so the courts have time to stop them. It’s starting to work.

📌NOTE: The sell-by date is up for people telling me they just can't pay attention to what is happening right now, because it's too much. 📌Sometimes you don't pick the fight, the fight picks you. So grow up, get up, and hit back, dammit. Or everything you think you have will already be gone ...

Ah that explains it. The US Marshall's were complicit:

Putin is full out celebrating our idiocy.

I want some linguist or sociologist or something to do a study on the lifecycle of terminology on the right. I've seen the same cycle repeat itself dozens, hundreds of times over the years. It goes like this: 🧵

I can think of at least eight federal laws that have been broken by Musk and his goons over the last few days, and at least two provisions of the U.S. Constitution. They must be stopped. Some thoughts: robertreich.substack.com/p/how-the-mu...

If you're not afraid of this, you're not paying attention... www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnb...

Trump is trying to “flood the zone” so we focus on a few outrages that we find most offensive and lose sight of the big picture. Some thoughts on how to maintain focus. robertreich.substack.com/p/keep-your-...

How quickly is our 53-day descent from democracy to fascism moving? Tonight—tonight!—I published a report asking how long it would be until Musk had normalized the Nazi salute as a mockery of “wokeness.” The answer—from my time of publication—was under an hour. America is in very serious trouble.

Great point

“One of the first signs of authoritarianism is that people start to comply with things before they are actually enforced. We can prepare for different scenarios, but we are not going to stop doing what we do."

Fun fact! When the Nazis were looking for templates for their horrible fucking laws, guess where they went looking! Yes! That's right! The US Jim Crow laws! So, yes. Fucking Jim Crow, yes.

The Space Telescope Science Institute 🔭 is also clamping down on anything resembling DEIA in the name of compliance. Just in case you thought it was restricted to agencies directly tied to the government like NSF.

Now this is just an ideological attack on science. To deny my colleagues their freedom of speech, wages, and basic needs simply because Trump and the Republicans can't accept that black, brown & trans people, women, and immigrants are excellent scientists [🔭🧪 #AcademicSky]

➡️ January 20: FAA director fired ➡️ January 21: Air Traffic Controller hiring frozen ➡️ January 22: Aviation Safety Advisory Committee disbanded ➡️ January 28: Buyout/retirement demand sent to existing employees ➡️ January 29: First American mid-air collision in 16 years Making America Great Again!

Let’s sort this out now: Anyone who attacks DEI as a bad thing is a racist who just won’t say it out loud. Period.

If you are a federal worker being offered a buyout, I would advise against taking it. Of course, this is a personal decision for everyone and it’s your choice. But these offers are a rush job. The legality is questionable and this admin does not keep to its word. They aren’t firing for a reason.

Keep your messaging simple: “Trump fired everyone in charge of airplane safety, and a week later planes started crashing into each other.” That’s it. That’s the messaging. Don’t get bogged down disputing Trump’s false claims. Just blame him, in short and repeatable sentences.

Apparently all the PhD researchers holding prestigious NSF-funded research fellowships are having their salaries withheld until some unspecified time when the leadership figures out how to eliminate any grant funding that doesn’t align with the president’s political ideology.

This. 100% this. If we keep fighting, we’re going to win at least some of these battles and make a difference:

AOC spot on , this is what leadership looks like.

remember stuff like this when they tell you that diversity means a lowering of standards

Two days ago he said he wanted Americans he’d put in prison to be exiled to a foreign place for incarceration far from prying eyes. Today he’s ordered a new detention center in Guantanamo Bay—justifying it by saying it’s only for foreigners. But for how long? Wake up, America. It’s all happening.

I knew all this was going to happen. But nothing can really prepare you for what it feels like when the moment actually arrives. This is why we need each other and our communities. I plan to turn to them a lot in the coming years.

Pay attention to America's infrastructure of wealth, secrecy, and tax avoidance, and you might find yourself asking an uncomfortable question. “We talk all the time about Putin and his oligarchic friends," Bernie Sanders told us. “But for obvious reasons, we don’t talk about oligarchy in the US.”
