@KydiaMusic Excellent, it’s like a general amnesty—our records have been expunged and we get to try again.

And I’m assuming here that there are mallets that would sound good on both instruments. Are there? (I would not want the sound of too-hard mallets on the low end of the marimba. Somewhat muffled sound from soft mallets on the toms is probably okay.)

@ehler That’s my guess too. The most comfortable layout I can think of would be a compact set of toms placed perpendicular to the marimba near one end, probably the low end. Then you could stand in one place and reach both with either hand, but only if you kept to about half of the marimba’s […]

@KydiaMusic Two is a lot. Pace yourself, it’s only Monday.

@ShrikeTron @ducky I can’t speak for Western countries. But in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, a relatively accepting place, people don’t attack or yell at me for wearing a mask; they’ve seen it before, they know what it is. But they don’t think it’s normal—they think it’s weird.

@KydiaMusic Watch out fascists, Doots got his eye on you.

@skinnylatte I don’t understand, I thought AGI was supposed to create itself. They shouldn’t be hiring for any roles.

@Remittancegirl That’s one of the reasons I take refuge in creating music. To the data-driven, results-oriented mind, music is extravagantly pointless. And thus, deeply human, and necessary in mysterious but essential ways.

I should have got a screenshot but when I tried again it was correct

@KydiaMusic We all thank them for this important work—hang in there

@botechiatales Yes, thanks—that’s actually what I was leaning toward. It gets a little trickier for the choral voices because they read each other’s parts to stay oriented. My priorities are 1) what will help the singers 2) what’s clearest in each instrumental part independently , and last) […]

I get why some atonal composers (e.g. Wuorinen) just put an accidental on every single note. But that seems like overkill to me. Usually with note spelling, there’s something wrong with every option, so you have to decide who you allow to be annoyed. And everyone can see right away how what I […]

Aside from the playability issue, here's an example of the kind of thing I agonize over: that B-flat in the violas' double-stop would make more sense as an A#. Major 3rds are friendlier to read and tune than diminished 4ths, and the line goes on via C natural to B, so the voice leading is […]

[U.S. politics, Ukraine] @jeff @kat This is right. I’ve lived my whole life listening to US conservatives yell “appeasement!” and “Neville Chamberlain!” about every attempt by anyone to do anything by diplomacy, while they pretend to be Churchill defiantly holding the line against the enemy […]

If I'm on the right track, I'll write several more bars of related material leading up to this and winding down from it. But if I need to dial this back, I'd want to do that first rather than rewrite it all twice. Thanks!

People keep saying the Fediverse is full of reply guys who nitpick every little thing, and yet somehow no one corrected me on this. The Castellano hit was December 16, 1985, as I correctly remembered. But today is not December 16, 2025 as I inexplicably thought earlier. I don’t know what’s […]

@tiikerikani Interesting question; I’m not really familiar enough with the style to say, but I think that’s what I was commenting on here a while back: https://musicians.today/@mcmullin/113277666432614814

@futurebird Since I was never crazy about the original preppy fad (which was a thing when I was in 6th grade), I don’t at all mind them changing the meaning. And if they want to stick hearts and cutesy things on someone’ up-collar pastel alligator shirts and sockless docksider shoes, that’s […]

@VeroniqueB99 And there’s one of each in every couple.

I’m uncomfortable with this idea insofar as it feels like an invitation for white Americans to—like we always always do—congratulate ourselves for things for which Black people deserve the credit. On the other hand, it would clearly be impossible to live in close proximity with such a vital […]
