If you’re a JSOC dude who’s been bricked into the walls of a compound in Syria for the last three weeks as part of a plan to disrupt a neurotoxin transfer, Signal me at timmarchman.01 when you get fired for not sending Elon Musk’s intern a bullet-pointed list of this week’s wins.

It's $80-ish each way, too. For the same dates, the cheapest flight was twice as much. On Spirit.

I think there's a much bigger conversation to be had about the business model of R1 universities. If you're at a public uni, your Department's state funding may be contingent on meeting PhD admissions quotas that 'justify' the continued existence of its grad programs.

It’s probably a good day to explain to your non-scientist socials that graduate students are not merely the next generation of academic science, they are an important component of the current scientific labor force. Feel free to mention that this is cut rate labor as well.

Barkley: I’m telling you the Gamecube was better than the SNES. the SNES is overrated Kenny: you’re crazy. he’s crazy, man Shaq: Chuck’s never played Chrono Trigger Barkley: how am I supposed to play a 30 year old game? Kenny: you NEVER bought a DS? Ernie: I like the Wii

This is pretty much undeniable fact at this point: a good chunk of white America (particularly local elites) decided that the popular election of a black man represented a rejection of the common social compact, and they've spent the ensuing decade or so in reactionary revolt

Looking for folks who like concept albums and pet rabbits, but not at the same time.

Yep. Local projects like playgrounds, sidewalks, safety improvements, crosswalks, bike lanes, bridge repairs, stocked fishing lakes, pond maintenance, etc are all often paid for with federal grants applied for by municipal governments and HoAs. That's all gonna go away now.

And here it is, my Joker moment. I am insane now.

That's an expensive game so they really hate this car

Starting a GoFundMe to redirect the MJ Lenderman/Wild Pink tour to my house.

Job: Come work with me! Please repost! We're seeking a faculty colleague whose research, teaching, and outreach focuses on water quality and freshwater ecosystems in the context of climate change. Review of applications will begin April 15, 2025. careers.msu.edu/jobs/assista...

Class war against poor, disabled, and working people being waged by the world’s richest man.

Funny how the "#Hornets are a joke for sending damaged goods to the Lakers" and "Rob Pelinka said so and so, therefore it's true" narrative is crumbling. The banana in the tailpipe trick is unraveling.

Cuomo was a consistent embarrassment as governor, did an impression of Chef Boyardee when confronted about his sex crime spree, and, through incompetence and malice, *killed a bunch of helpless people* and lied about it, and when he was confronted about THAT, responded “who cares?”

They're dismantling the agency that can, if it did robust enforcement, fill the deficit. For every $1 it spends on enforcement it generates $5-$9 in revenue. We lose ~1 trillion dollars each year to tax fraud, mostly from the rich. Musk paid no income tax in 2021 www.propublica.org/article/the-...

This is incredibly smart by @ryanhatesthis.bsky.social, a lesson Democrats have to learn fast. There will be no a-ha moment for the electorate. You can't wait around for people to realize how bad it is if they'll invariably wind up blaming the Reverse Vampires. You just have to fight, right now.

The fact that Democrats aren't putting people like this in front of cameras on every major news station every day is an insane fault on their part

when i say that there are people who care less about workers and their rights than they do the primacy of a masculinist blue collar identity politics, i am taking about people like sean o’brien

I had to educate my college friends on this today after one of them posted this tattoo pic and none of them understood why I was saying Carly Rae was one of the two objectively valid + correct choices here. As for the third, I get why someone would say TSwift, but that doesn't make them right.

🌊Fresh findings coming soon! (1/5) We found that climate causes changes in algal growth in freshwater lakes. The organisms are small, but the implications of these findings and the methods used to achieve them are vast. Check out why it matters below 👇🏻🧪

She governs scared even for a Democrat, but a governor who wanted a national profile would boot Adams out of the paint and brag on congestion pricing as the historic W it is. She could have Hochulmania Running Wild headlines but is afraid of angering Long Islanders whose votes she'll never win.

These mistakes are so predictable when you put a bunch of 20 year old kids in charge--who have no actual experience using and analyzing government data, administrative data, or survey data. We all learned the hard way, but unlike these numbskulls, we weren't in a position to crash the economy.

Collaborators fired at USDA. Program officers fired at NSF. Study sections suspended indefinitely at NIH (also firings). It's impossible to just keep your head down and do the work, as the work and the people are vanishing in front of us. 🧪

In lighter (heavier?) news, one particularly large beaver has been seen frequently along the Chicago River. "Lori Heavyfoot, Southside Large Marge, Dam Ryan, Sufjan Beavens and Sigourney Beaver are some top contenders suggested by people on Reddit." blockclubchicago.org/2025/02/18/a...

EMACULENT (the green parody, that is)

People leave academic jobs to be program officers at NSF and other agencies. Many programs have trouble recruiting for these permanent positions. The damage this will do to US science will be long lasting. #academicsky

I've been trying to figure out where all the "Andrew Cuomo would win the NYC mayoral race in a snap election" hype/doomerism was coming from, and it turns out the answer is as dumb and bad as you'd expect

This is an Econ paper for Bridgerton and Jane Austen fans.

If you are an entomologist affected by these federal terminations or know someone who was, please DM me. I’m working on an advocacy plan and need to start gathering support. As a first step, if you’re a member of the Entomological Society of America, I have a link for you, DM me. #entomology 🧪

I wrote the Rays season preview today at Baseball Prospectus. It includes some writing of which I am quite proud. There's a lot of baseball insight too. If you appreciate this sort of content, please subscribe. www.baseballprospectus.com/news/article...

if you were accidentally fired while transporting a nuclear warhead and currently need a place to stay with said warhead please know that i have a sizable backyard and an abiding desire to be a nuclear power

Pitched a piece to my hometown paper and they responded within like 10 minutes saying they definitely want to see it. So yeah, I think this has potential

Fans are also concerned that going to games is increasingly unaffordable, and broadcasts keep getting peeled away from their cable/MLBtv subscription and put on some random streaming app, but I'm guessing fixing those issues won't be a priority.

when you make a valuable contribution to the slack.

apropos of nothing in current events, I can kind of see why so many of Batman's villains have PhDs now

Bright passionate people who wanted to dedicate their lives to public service were fired in a mass email over the holiday weekend. This has absolutely nothing to do with efficiency, fraud, waste, or abuse. And your life will be worse because of it.

This is going to be framed by centrist goons as a war on the managerial class. But this is an assault on people who do anything meaningful with their lives, brought to you by the guys who have been doing this to teachers for generations.

hey so sorry, i'm going to be 10 minutes late to our zoom call, my mental breakdown is running over
