FFXI doesn't have a cash shop. They don't charge you for missing out on old events. You just show up when the event returns and play the event. And if the rewards are updated, old rewards can be bought from the moogle vendors.
I've spent more on FFXIV and its cash shop than FFXI's sub.

Yeah I decided to take up crafting basically because I didn't see some of my fave pieces on the auction house. There are a lot of pieces that can only be crafted.
And yesss, we always welcome more carpenters!^^ I'm aiming more for goldsmithing and weaver.
