Well said. Everything matters, especially the little things.

Agreed! This is also great advice for GMs when it comes to tabletop games. Big picture story is important, but also the moments in-between and the ones that aren’t part of that big picture, they matter so much and can be memorable and attention grabbing in their own way.

Being able to skillfully plot a macro story is great, but readers, players, and viewers experience a story in its moments, not in outline. You need to be able to craft individual beats that grab people by the heart or mind. Or both :)

And look, it’s not as simple as it sounds. When you get to a certain level of seniority, you might spend more of your day giving notes and directing than actually writing (hi).
But you need to find the time to practice + get feedback from honest people who are better than you

Having that freedom is important and something I feel is worth championing always, but meeting the intended experience halfway is, too — it’s a very careful relationship to balance and every game handles it differently.

The intention of your story will dictate what’s possible for the player to feasibly engage with, regarding the general elasticity of roleplay options and the complications therein. The ‘how, where, and why’ always differs but what matters is how far you’re allowed to drift beyond headcanon.
